International Thessaloniki Night Half Marathon

Runners complete 21.0975 kilometers through Thessaloniki after dark at the International Thessaloniki Night Half Marathon. The race takes place in the Greek city in the fall, offering a main half marathon plus 10K and 5K options for those seeking a shorter night run. MEAS TRITON organizes the event with support from the city of Thessaloniki and its sponsors. The course winds through Thessaloniki’s streets, not a park loop, and the night setting defines the race’s character. Local runners, international visitors, club runners, and casual participants attend. Music and entertainment are provided along the route, and runners receive a post-race party with food and drinks. Some past participants have commended the drummers but desired the course to remain seaside, while others have mentioned that English information can be scarce.

Sohos Mountain Games

Sohos Mountain Games is a mountain running event in Sohos, Thessaloniki, centered on the Sohos Trail Run. It features two trail distances: a 10 km race and a 25 km option for solo runners. The longer course measures 25.73 km with 1,033 meters of elevation gain, presenting a true mountain challenge rather than a simple forest path. The event is in its second consecutive year, having attracted over 600 athletes from 52 regions during its initial running. The 25 km race is eligible for ITRA points, holds Mountain Level 4 and Finisher Level 310 ratings, and is included in the National League. The Sports and Cultural Association Sokos Hermes organizes the event, with the Local Community of Sohos, Sohos Traditional Homes, and the Municipality of Lagkada serving as co-organizers.

Kilkis Trail

The Kilkis Trail begins on Agios Georgios Hill, overlooking Kilkis in northern Greece, and is held as part of the city’s liberation commemorations. This local trail-running series is organized by the Kilkis Health Runners Association, with backing from the Municipality of Kilkis and the Kilkis regional authority. The primary event is a 20 km loop course featuring 700 meters of ascent and 700 meters of descent, complete with aid stations and a three-hour time limit. The event offers participants multiple ways to engage, extending beyond the main trail race. Options include a 5 km run, a 4 x 4.8 km relay, a 10.5 km race named the Heroes of Kilkis Race, a 4.8 km Health Race, and 1 km races for children and para-athletes. This variety integrates the event with the local community, welcoming not only specialist mountain runners but also club runners, relay teams, families, and local residents who can all begin from the same hill and participate together.

About cycling & running in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki Training Notes

Running: Locals run the waterfront first, especially Nea Paralia, because the coast gives easy Z2 and clean intervals. The route covers 04 km and gains 57 m, so it works when you just need steady base miles. Palios Zoologikos Kipos and Pedion tou Areos add short urban laps, while Mount Chortiatis gives trail races and proper climbing. The climb runs 13 km with 857 m of gain. Kourkourikis training group is the easy local shout, and the International Thessaloniki Night Half Marathon is the big anchor event.

Cycling: Cyclists here talk routes before clubs or crits, and locals look north and east when they want work. The ride from Thessaloniki to Filyro, 3 Platania road, and Exochi gives 45k with a climb to 600 meters, so it is not fake elevation. Chortiatis is the obvious climbing name, and the route you choose will be beautiful, but hilly. The road towards Polygyros is probably the safest option from the local chatter. Panorama sits near natural paths through the green belt, and Kalamarià keeps the coastal spin close when the legs need Z2.

Season: March through October is the real season, and spring is the sweet spot because cooler days turn the forests green. The Thermaikos coast and the Axios valley feel fast then, so runners can chase road races along the coast and cyclists can stack base miles without drama. August changes the clock, because most days exceed 35C during the day, and locals go early or late. Winter stays usable, but the city gets windy, occasional morning frost shows up, and snow cover usually lasts only a few days, so both sports shift toward shorter sessions and flexible routes.
