Olympus Marathon

The Olympus Marathon is a mountain trail race series held near Dion, Greece, with its main event weekend at the end of June. The featured race is the 44km Olympus Marathon, ascending 3350m, and the Olympus Ultra extends to 71km with 5550m of climbing. Shorter races offer alternatives to a single demanding mountain event: the Olympus Vertical covers 4.25km with approximately 1000m of elevation gain, Melindra Trail is a 5km route for novices and younger participants, and Eagle's Ridge provides a mid-length mountain course. The races utilize the slopes and higher elevations of Mount Olympus, differing from a typical town-based course. The Vertical race begins at Prionia, at an altitude of roughly 1050m, and concludes on the Mouson Plateau at about 2650m, making its short distance exceptionally steep. The primary finish line is in Litohoro at 300m. Organizers provide live weather updates from Litohoro, Prionia, and the high plateau due to potential rapid condition changes with altitude. The 44km race attracted over 300 participants in its most recent running, and the longer events are part of the UTMB Index Races system, drawing competitive mountain runners seeking significant results alongside local and visiting trail runners attracted by Mount Olympus.

Olympus Vertical

The Olympus Vertical is a short, steep mountain race on Mount Olympus in Greece, held in June as part of the Olympus Marathon program. Runners cover just 4.25 km, but they climb about 1,000 m, making it a vertical kilometer rather than a standard trail run. The race starts at Prionia near Litochoro in Pieria and finishes high on the mountain at 2,063 m. The route uses the Gkoumaro trail, has no aid stations, and is open only to adults, requiring runners to arrive prepared for a demanding, self-supported climb.

BLACK YARD Ultra by Mamali Festival

The BLACK YARD Ultra by Mamali Festival begins and ends at Mamali Festival Base Camp, located in the mountains above Mamali. The race area is situated at approximately 1454 metres above sea level. This event features a Last Runner Standing ultra alongside a 12 km trail race and a 1 km kids' race. The main ultra is designed for experienced adult trail and ultra runners, not casual beginners. The 12 km loop ascends 514 metres, primarily on trail, with 10 km of path and 2 km of dirt road. The ultra involves repeatedly running the same 12 km loop until only one runner remains. The initial lap has a 2-hour time limit, which decreases by 3 minutes each subsequent round, increasing the challenge even though the route stays the same. Failing to meet a cut-off time or missing the next start line results in elimination. Base Camp, at 1420 metres, offers free camping, showers, toilets, meals, power access, and a festival atmosphere. Initial aid includes electrolytes, bananas, water, Coca-Cola, and snacks, transitioning after 4 hours to include potatoes, pasta, and soup. Entry is limited to 100 participants, a medical certificate is required, and mandatory equipment includes a headlamp, phone, water bottles, rain jacket, and emergency blanket.

About cycling & running in Larissa

Larissa Base Miles

Running: Larissa runners use the Pineios river and the city centre when they want steady base miles without fuss. The city centre gives you the Ancient Theater on Venizelou, where the 8th Hippocratic 10km race started at 09:30 on May 7, 2017. Frourio Hill gives the run a small bite when flat Z2 gets boring. EA Larissa keeps the local club name in the mix. Locals also look out toward 2nd Sykourio Trail 2026, Titnata Trail 2026, Karya Olympus Trail 2026, and Olympus Marathon.

Cycling: Larissa riders have 222 cycle routes to play with, so the bike became my permanent means of transport feels normal here. One route runs 5 km and gains 151 m, which makes it a clean endurance day. Another route runs 3 km and climbs 1,528 m when you want proper gran fondo legs. One route runs 8 km and stacks 1,959 m ascent for the big day. Mount Olympus and Mount Kissavos sit north, so the climbs pull that way. EA Larissa, Apollon, and Iraklis keep the club scene familiar.

Season: January and March are the months when most riders get on their bikes, and the plain of Thessaly makes those Z2 miles easy to stack. Summer brings real heat, and Larissa often sees days near or above 40°C, so locals keep intervals sharp and avoid wasting matches. Summer thunderstorms can hit hard, and riders treat the sky with respect before a long loop. Winter turns cold, and some snowfalls can show up even if few are heavy. Runners stay close to the city centre and Pineios river when weather moves fast, while riders pick flatter routes before heading back toward Olympus or Kissavos.
