The Sfakia Sky Marathon is a 44 km mountain ultra in the Sfakia area of Chania, Greece, featuring approximately 3,050 m of climbing and descent. The race takes place on an October weekend and returns for its sixth edition after a one-year hiatus. It is a trail race with a limited field, capped at 150 entries. Runners require an ITRA number and proof of two recent trail races of at least 21 km. The route centers on Anopoli and Loutro, with Pachnes, the 2,454 m summit in the White Mountains, as its most significant landmark. Race logistics contribute to its character: bibs can be collected in Anopoli or Chora Sfakion, a bag can be left for the Anopoli finish, and a morning ferry transports participants to Loutro. Mandatory equipment includes a hydration vest, emergency blanket, mobile phone, windproof jacket, and a reusable cup, as aid stations do not provide plastic cups.
The Sfakia Vertical Run is a short, steep mountain race in southwest Crete, linking the small port of Loutro with Anopoli above Chora Sfakion. It takes place in late October and includes about 680 meters of climbing over roughly 5 kilometers. While the distance seems modest on paper, the effort is almost entirely uphill. Participants gather at Chora Sfakion port for bib pickup, then board a ferry to Loutro. The race begins from the ferry ramp, establishing an unusual sea-to-mountain rhythm before the running commences. The course begins with about 500 meters along the car-free Loutro seafront before turning onto a rocky path ascending toward the chapel of Agia Aikaterini. The primary climb spans approximately 3.5 kilometers, accounting for nearly all the race's elevation gain. Poles and a hat are advised, though no mandatory equipment is specified. Competitors must ring the church bell at the chapel to confirm their passage. The descent covers about 900 meters via path, road, and kalderimi to Anopoli square. The event has a participant limit of a few hundred athletes, with two aid stations, a mid-course cut-off point, medical support, electronic timing, bag transfer to the finish, and 4x4 transport for those unable to complete the course.

Season: The brief does not pin down best months, so locals build the season around route choice. Summer stays coastal in feel, with short city runs, 5,000m race efforts, and early Z2 on the bike before the longer climbs bite. Winter changes the rhythm more than the map. Runners can keep intervals on 5km Gyros Polis Rethymno, Carnival Run 3,5 km, and the 2000m Nikiforeios route. Riders can keep fitness on 36 km to 61 km loops, then save the 106 km, 118 km, and 134 km days for bigger legs. The small distance from the northern coasts to the south keeps variety close.
