Chios Night Run

The Chios Night Run begins at the port of Chios, sending runners after dark through the island’s main town. As part of the Mastichathlon program, it provides three race options: a 1,000m for younger participants, a 5K suitable for many, and a 10K for those seeking a longer challenge. The event starts in the evening, with a technical briefing prior and awards later that night, focusing on running under lights instead of a typical morning race. The course follows an urban night route shaped by the port, town center, and sea air, distinct from a remote trail or countryside path. The participants are intended to include children, beginners, regular runners, and older athletes, with age categories from young adults up to 60+. Entrants get chip timing, a race number, a technical shirt, and a medal bearing the race insignia, along with water, snacks, and a light meal post-finish. Its primary historical note is that this is the inaugural Chios Night Run and the island’s first major night running event.

Port2Port Chios Duathlon - Individual

The Port2Port Chios Duathlon is a point-to-point race across Chios island. It begins with a 40 km road-bike leg from Meston Port and concludes with a 10 km run at Chios Port. The event is designed for individual athletes, limited to 200 participants. It is a road race with partial traffic control, complete closures in the neutral zone, and a mandatory helmet policy. Only road bikes are permitted; aerobars and time-trial helmets are prohibited, but drafting is allowed during the cycling portion. The transition occurs at Thymiania, where athletes switch from cycling to running before proceeding to the port finish. Hydration stations are located at Kalamoti, approximately 20 km into the bike leg, again at the transition area, and at the 3 km, 5 km, and 7 km marks of the run. The SKINOS Cycling Team and ChiosRunning are the organizers. The entry package includes a technical T-shirt, timing chip, bib, commemorative gifts, a trophy medal, refreshment support, and a return ferry ticket for athletes and their companions on domestic routes.

About cycling & running in Chios

Chios Training Notes

Running: Locals keep running simple in Chios town, along the coast, and out toward Kampos when they want flatter base miles before the hills. Chios Running gives the island its club spine and keeps the Port2Port crowd moving. Port2Port 10K Run and Port2Port 5K Run work as clean anchor efforts when you want race pace without drama. Chios Hardstone Trail gives trail runners the rougher day out. Women’s Run, Oinousses Run, Chios Night Run, and Santa ChiosRunning race keep the calendar lively. Kids race 5km, so the scene feels properly local.

Cycling: Local riders use Chios town, Kampos, Mastichochoria, and the villages because cycling gives us the chance to know different sides of Chios. Chios Brevet crosses the island for 200 kilometers, and experienced cyclists treat it like a real anchor event. Volissos Mountain Challenge runs 120 km and gains 3051 m, so the climbs bite hard in the north. Damala’s Tower covers 85 km and gains 2080 m, while Lagkada Hills Challenge covers 105 km and gains 2582 m. Mt. Provatas, Nea Moni, Agioi Pateres, Anavatos, Retsinadika, mt. Pelinaio, and Mastichochoria trail give mountain bikers singletrack days and cyclocross legs.

Season: Spring and autumn are the best months for both sports because the island lets you stack Z2, intervals, long runs, and gran fondo prep without the hottest summer edge. Summer temperatures reach 30°C, and steady breezes average 5 m/s from the north or southwest, so locals start early and keep coastal sessions sharp. January temperatures drop to 10°C, and the same steady breezes keep winter honest rather than dead. The north stays mountainous, the south feels arid, and the ridge running the island keeps route choice important when winter hits.
