The Lake Plastira Standard Triathlon is an individual Olympic-distance race held at Lake Plastira, a mountain lake in Greece bordered by green slopes. This race is part of a larger multisport event that also features a Sprint Triathlon and an Aquathlon. The Standard race begins with a 1,500-metre swim. The timing is set to provide favorable weather conditions. The region's altitude and dense vegetation contribute to cooler temperatures, with low humidity and minimal wind. Both the Standard and Sprint triathlons are part of the WTL Triathlon league. The event is organized by the Municipality of Lake Plastira and whynot, with backing from national culture and tourism organizations.
The BLACK YARD Ultra by Mamali Festival begins and ends at Mamali Festival Base Camp, located in the mountains above Mamali. The race area is situated at approximately 1454 metres above sea level. This event features a Last Runner Standing ultra alongside a 12 km trail race and a 1 km kids' race. The main ultra is designed for experienced adult trail and ultra runners, not casual beginners. The 12 km loop ascends 514 metres, primarily on trail, with 10 km of path and 2 km of dirt road. The ultra involves repeatedly running the same 12 km loop until only one runner remains. The initial lap has a 2-hour time limit, which decreases by 3 minutes each subsequent round, increasing the challenge even though the route stays the same. Failing to meet a cut-off time or missing the next start line results in elimination. Base Camp, at 1420 metres, offers free camping, showers, toilets, meals, power access, and a festival atmosphere. Initial aid includes electrolytes, bananas, water, Coca-Cola, and snacks, transitioning after 4 hours to include potatoes, pasta, and soup. Entry is limited to 100 participants, a medical certificate is required, and mandatory equipment includes a headlamp, phone, water bottles, rain jacket, and emergency blanket.
Running: Locals run the Lithaios river first, then drift through the old neighborhoods when they want easy Z2 without thinking too much. The city centre works for shakeouts and short intervals, especially before work. The loop around the valley is 88 km with +638 m. The climb to Pertouli is 29 km and climbs +2,067 m, so nobody treats it like a casual jog. are the named clubs here. RunGreece Trikala 2026 and TrikalaHalfMarathon are the anchor dates. The 21K Challenge is the fast one.
Cycling: Locals ride a lot because Trikala has 34 cycle routes and the tracked total reaches 5,928 km. The city centre is good for short spins, and Βασίλη Τσιτσάνη Βασίλη to Ευθυμίου Οικονομίδη gives 5 km with 25 m ascent and 69 m descent. The bigger base miles point toward Lake Plastiras, Karditsa, Kalampaka, and the south Pindus. One route gives 7 km with 1,780 m ascent when legs need climbing. C. The Hellenic Mountain Race and The Lake Plastira races sit on the calendar.
Season: Spring and autumn are the clean picks for both running and riding because the weather stays quite mild. Summer gets very hot, so locals start early, keep Z2 honest, and save hard intervals for the cooler edges of the day. Lake Plastiras still works in summer when you want longer trail time or a steadier gran fondo feel. Winter changes the rhythm more than the map. Freezing temperatures show up sporadically, especially on winter nights, and occasional snowfall usually stays not significant. The south Pindus climbs need more respect then, while the Lithaios and city-centre loops keep base miles simple.
