Run Greece Alexandroupoli

Run Greece Alexandroupoli takes place in September as part of the national Run Greece series, organized by SEGAS, the Hellenic Athletics Federation. The day features accessible city races: a 10km road race, a 5km road race and power walk, a 1,000m children’s race, and a 600m family run. The 10km begins on Megalou Alexandrou Street, directly before the Lighthouse, and concludes at the same location, establishing a clear landmark at the event's core. The Lighthouse area also serves as the finish for the children’s race, which begins at the Evros Regional Unit Building on Karaoli & Dimitriou Street. Participants collect their race numbers and kits at the Alexandroupolis Prefecture Building. Each race number has an embedded timing chip; the kit also contains safety pins and a bag sticker. Run Greece was established to promote organized road running across multiple cities, and the Alexandroupoli event adheres to this structure: timed races for regular runners, a shorter power-walk option, and separate events for children and families, all connected to a visible public square by the seafront.

Silk city Run

The Silk City Run begins in the central square of Soufli, a Greek town known as the city of silk. This June road race is part of Soufli’s Cultural Summer program and features two main events: the 10 km “Metaxi / Silk Run” and the 5 km “Koukouli / Cocoon Run.” The longer race starts before the shorter one, simplifying the day for participants and observers. The Municipality of Soufli organizes the event, with local professional, merchant, and artisan groups assisting in its preparation. It welcomes amateur runners, experienced athletes, families, and young people, not exclusively competitive racers. The silk theme is integrated into the race names and the town's identity, making the event a running day and a means to draw people into Soufli’s streets during the summer cultural schedule.

About cycling & running in Alexandroupoli

Alexandroupoli Training Notes

Running: Locals keep running simple in Alexandroupoli, with easy Z2 from the city centre, coastal out-and-backs, and longer loops toward Makri and Dikella. The Νυχτερινός Αγώνας Θράκης - Διαδρομή gives a sharp 5 km hit and gains 27 m, so it works for midweek intervals without making a drama of it. The city has no named run club in the brief, so people tend to anchor around races and regular meetups by habit. Run Greece Alexandroupoli, Silk City Run, WAVE running – Coastal Running Race, OrestisRun, OrestisKids, and ArdasRiverRun keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Riders get the better deal here, because Alexandroupolis is probably the friendliest city in Greece for cyclists. The city centre has a large network of cycle paths, bike parking, road signs, and shops for selling, renting, and repairing bikes. The climb covers 6 km and gains 527 m. The wooded areas give mountain bikers natural tracks for singletrack, cyclocross legs, and gravel riding. The brief names no cycling clubs, and no named cycling anchor race.

Season: The brief gives no named best months, so the honest read is season, not calendar. Summers stay hot and dry, and locals move runs and rides earlier, keep intervals short, and save longer Z2 for the coast or the villages west of town. The city centre works well for steady spins when the heat is up, and the coastal line keeps running simple when pace is not the point. Winters turn cool and wet, and runners stay close to town while riders pick road days carefully, use the cycle lanes, or head for wooded tracks when the surface suits.
