About cycling & running in Hiroshima

Hiroshima Training Notes

Running: Locals use the extra-wide boulevards, Peace Park, and the Ōta River islands when they want honest city miles without fuss. Hiroshima Sunset Running Club gives you the easy social anchor, and the group runs every Saturday around Ujina beach. Patagonia Hiroshima sometimes has easy run days, so runners can find company before chasing intervals alone. Mount Ogonsan Loop is 02 km and gains 700 m, so it works when Z2 turns into a proper grind. The Shimanami Kaido route runs 91 km and gains 425 m, while Setouchi Island Trail gives the annual 11 km or 22 km anchor event from Kenmin-no-hama Beach Park on Kami-kamagari Island.

Cycling: Locals ride the islands when they want steady base miles and sea air, and the road around Mukaishima is the clean starter loop. The road around Mukaishima is marked with a blue line for tourists on bikes, but riders still pedal hard when the pace turns spicy. Setouchi Island Trail is the named anchor event here, and it brings the same superb views and challenging terrain that trail runners talk about. Hiroshima has no named cycling club in the source notes, so visitors should treat the ride scene as route-led first. Noro, Yasumiyama, Hachigamine, and Iwakuni Mtn hold the climbs; Noro Course gains 760 m over 11.65 km.

Season: August gives the warmest month and the sunnier, drier summer window after June and July bring peak rainfall. Summer runs feel hot and humid, so locals keep Z2 honest, start early, and let the fresh air blow through sweaty clothes after the work is done. Summer rides need the same respect, especially when the weather is still muggy in early September around Mukaishima. Winter brings cool to mild days and the driest season, so runners can stack intervals without the soaked kit drama. Cyclists use winter for base miles on the delta and hill repeats on Noro or Yasumiyama.
