Mollen Marathon

The Mollen Marathon is a small, low-frills marathon in Almere Buiten, offering shorter distances alongside the full 42.2 km. Entry numbers are limited, and walkers are welcome, giving it the feel of a club outing rather than a large city race. The setup is self-sufficient: participants pay a small fee, register by email, and bring their own supplies as there are no changing rooms, showers, toilets, or refreshments. The route begins with an approach section, then consists of seven laps, a format that is easy to follow and manage. The marathon time limit is eight hours with some flexibility, suitable for steady walkers and runners. Afterward, organizers compile results, and participants can receive a certificate; trim and walking booklets can be stamped. A distinctive Mollen Marathon medal is available for purchase, aligning with the minimalist style: pay for the run, then decide if you want the keepsake.

Challenge Almere-Amsterdam

Challenge Almere-Amsterdam is a multi-day triathlon and running event in Almere, Flevoland. Racing centers on the Weerwater and the city’s low, flat ground below sea level. Held in September, it offers a full long-distance triathlon (3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run), plus middle distance, aqua bike, Junior Challenge, super sprint, kids races, and a standalone marathon. The swim starts at the Esplanade beside the Kunstlinie, moving counter-clockwise through the Weerwater before the first transition at Lumierepark. The bike course uses wide polder roads, with two laps for the long distance and one for the middle distance. The run begins in Lumierepark, looping through the modern city center around the Weerwater. Long-distance athletes complete an opening 900-meter lap, four 10.1 km laps, and a final 900 meters. The marathon runs alongside the closing stages of the long-distance triathlon, so runners and triathletes share the later race atmosphere.

About cycling & running in Almere

Almere Base Miles

Running: Almere Running Crew keeps the social miles simple, with weekly runs through Almere and routes planned by WhatsApp. Tante Trail gives women a Saturday 10:00 trail option, with 5 or 10 km routes, although its start location changes every 6 weeks on the Veluwe. Locals use NS station Almere Poort for the MST route, then choose 15 km to Almere Centrum, 24 km to Almere Buiten, or 32 km to Almere Oostvaarders. The MST route puts about 75% of the day on unpaved ground, with single tracks and forest paths. Almere Weerwater Run, Mollen Marathon, De 30 van Almere, and Nobel Run Almere sit on the race calendar.

Cycling: Almere rides flat, wide, and watery, and the paved cycle paths give you a huge route network for Z2 and intervals. You can ride 2 km from IJmeerdijk, along the beach, and back to the water. You can ride 2 km straight through nature. You can do a 4 mi gravel day, then hit MTB Kotterbos Trekweg-A6, MTB Kepmhaan Noord, or MTB Kepmhaan Zuid for singletrack. The 3 km road route gives 144 m of elevation, and the real bumps sit at Naarderstraat in Laren and Hollandsebrug richting Almere.

Season: Summer gives Almere the easiest training rhythm, with warm days, fair precipitation, long water-side spins, and clean base miles around Weerwater, IJmeer, Gooimeer, Markermeer, and Oostvaardersplassen. Locals still respect the grass sections on runs, because plenty of grasland can twist an ankle when you switch off. Winter stays mild to cool, so running and riding keep going, just with more layers and steadier Z2. The flat city makes winter intervals honest, while gravel roads, forest paths, and cyclocross-style singletrack around De Kemphaan and Oostvaardersplassen turn soft ground into useful work.
