Running: Locals keep running simple here: shoes on and go. Rondje Stad is the classic lap, because the route tracks the old city walls and feels right before work or after dinner. Rondje Schothorstpark gives you markings every 100 meters, so intervals stay easy to measure. Soesterduinen carries the longer trail mood, with a 10 km route plus 5 km blue and 3 km yellow options. Amersfoort Run Club meets every Tuesday at 19:15 from Eemplein at about 6:30 min/km. Tante Trail runs women-only trail groups on Saturdays. Marathon Amersfoort is the anchor event.
Cycling: Locals ride out of the old centre and get to green space fast. The Eem River paths suit Z2 base miles and gentle spins. The Royal bicycle route links Baarn, Paleis Soestdijk, the Soesterduinen, and the polder along the Eem. The Around Spakenburg route runs through Arkemheen-Eemland toward Bunschoten-Spakenburg. The Amersfoort Beer Route keeps the social ride local. TC Hoogland sits on the club list if you want a name to start with. The Utrechtse Heuvelrug brings the climbs, and Amerongse berg reaches 69 meters near De Proloog.
Season: Spring and summer feel like the cleanest build for both sports. Locals use the park loops, the dunes, and the Eem paths for steady weeks, then sharpen with Schothorstpark intervals or a harder Heuvelrug ride. Summer keeps the city lively, and Amersfoort still has that neat Olympic footnote from the 1928 Summer Olympics modern pentathlon. Winter changes the rhythm more than the map. Runners stay close to Rondje Stad, Schothorstpark, and marked Beweegrondjes. Riders keep base miles flatter on the Eem River paths, then save the heavier gravel and Heuvelrug work for better days.
