About this race
Julian's Berry Farm Toi's Challenge is an 18 km trail race held annually in November in Whakatane, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, organized by the Whakatane Athletics and Harriers Club. The race begins at the clubrooms on Short Street, located in Rex Morpeth Park. While shorter than a half marathon, the challenging terrain makes it a demanding event, appealing to runners seeking a less predictable race after completing a half marathon. A 6 km option and a relay are also available for those preferring not to run the full 18 km solo.
The course utilizes the Nga Tapuwae o Toi track, a trail crossing coastal and bushland, named after a Maori chief who governed the region approximately 800 years ago. This imbues the race with a distinct local character compared to typical road races. Participants will encounter Whakatane's varied terrain, native bush, and ocean vistas, with a course that requires careful footing and perseverance alongside speed. Late entries are accepted the day before and on race morning, exclusively with cash payment.
