About this race
WAI2K is a trail-running series in New Zealand’s Wairarapa and Greater Wellington region. Races are based around Greytown, Tunnel Gully, and the hill-country trail network connecting them. It takes place in November as part of the WAI Running Festival, offering 12 km, 25 km, 50 km, and 100 km options. The 50K and 100K are the primary ultra distances. They begin early from Woodside Train Station in Greytown, while the shorter races start from Tunnel Gully’s Upper Picnic area in Upper Hutt.
The longer courses lead runners through a varied terrain of rivers, river beds, dense scrub, hills, trails, and steep technical descents. The 100K solo route runs from Woodside Station to Tunnel Gully. The 100K relay is designed for two-person teams, with a third person addable. Entries are limited to 100 competitors per category for the 50K and 100K. There is no rain-day backup due to logistical challenges. Forestry work near Goat Rock and Station Drive may affect sections of the Tunnel Gully area, potentially causing some shorter-course routes to use lower mountain-bike trails, while the 50K and 100K routes remain unaltered.
