The Silesia Ultramarathon is a 50 km road race through cities in Poland’s Silesian region, starting early in October. It is organized by the Silesia Marathon Foundation in Chorzów, with its office at Stadion Śląski, and receives support from the Marshal’s Office of the Silesian Voivodeship. Katowice, Mysłowice, Siemianowice Śląskie, and Chorzów are partner cities, making this a regional city-to-city ultra, not a mountain or trail race. The route follows urban streets with controlled car traffic, and the distance is certified by PZLA and World Athletics. Runners will find aid stations approximately every 5 km, with additional water points between them. This is important on a 50 km road course where pacing and consistent fueling are key challenges. Entrants must be adults, confirm their fitness to run, and adhere to instructions from police, municipal guards, and course staff.
Murckowski Rajd Rowerowy is a recreational group bike ride in Katowice, beginning at Plac Jana Kasprowicza in the Murcki district. It takes place in the evening, as Grupa Rowerowa Murcki focuses on night rides; therefore, working lights are essential equipment, alongside a helmet and a spare inner tube. The ride functions more as a social gathering than a competition, with the pace determined by the last participant, not the quickest. Experienced cyclists accompany the group to assist with safety and mechanical issues. Grupa Rowerowa Murcki organizes this event periodically in partnership with Katowice City Hall, aligning with the city's broader initiative to encourage more residents to cycle, supported by the Aktywne Miasta app and the Cycling Capital of Poland contest.
Running: Locals run Kościuszko Park, Leśny Park, Trzy Stawy, Park Śląski, Panewnicki Forest, and the Rybaczowki area. Kościuszko Park hosts Katowice parkrun, so it works for honest 5K effort or easy Z2 laps. Panewniki gives lots of wide paths with well-compacted surfaces, so even on a rainy day there is no mud. Las Murckowski is a great thing when you want cross-country rhythm. Katowice - Local Run Club gives the group option, with Franek Olejnik around the scene. Polmaraton Gestwinami Murckowskimi Sztafeta, Silesian Cross Marathon, Silesia Ultramarathon, Mocna Piatka, and Bieg Niepodleglosci im Dziewieciu z Wujka anchor the calendar.
Cycling: Locals ride Silesian Park for relaxed base miles, then point south when the legs need a bigger effort. The route runs 9 km and gains 380 m, so it suits steady road work without leaving the local rhythm. One route covers 5 km and climbs 187 m, while Gliwicykl #64 - Rododendrony stretches to about 90 km and gains 582 m. Murckowski Rajd Rowerowy is the easy anchor name. GKS Katowice, AZS AWF Katowice, AZS US Katowice, HKS Szopienice, and Rozwój Katowice sit in the wider club mix. The Silesian Beskids hold the real climbs for gran fondo legs, cyclocross strength, and long Z2 days.
Season: Katowice sits in the Silesian Highlands at a median elevation of 270 m, so even ordinary loops have a little bite. Spring brings 1°C, and locals use that stretch for intervals, longer evenings, and steady rides toward Tychy or Murcki. Summer runners stay in Kościuszko Park, Trzy Stawy, Panewniki, and Park Śląski when they want shade and clean footing. Winter drops to 5°C and turns both sports more honest. Runners get the pleasant crunch of feet on snow, while riders shift toward careful Z2, shorter road loops, and forest paths when the ice in patches really does not help.
