Christmas Route is a non-competitive mountain bike tour based in Murtosa, Portugal, with the start and finish in town. It concludes the NGPS cycling calendar in a Christmas mood, but remains a self-reliant ride: there is no official timing, no race ranking, and no competitive prizes. Riders select between two GPS-led options, approximately 60 km for the longer course or about 45 km for the shorter one, and the field is limited to 300 participants. The route follows rural roads and areas connected to the Ria de Aveiro, so the day focuses on navigating, riding steadily, and sharing the season-end outing rather than chasing a result. There are no course markings, aid stations, or official support along the way, making the GPS file and normal traffic rules integral to the experience. Amateur cyclists and regular bike enthusiasts are welcome; younger riders can enter the shorter route from age 14 with adult supervision and written parental permission, while the longer route is for adults.
The Costa Nova Triathlon begins and ends in Costa Nova do Prado, Aveiro, with participants starting in the late afternoon. It's an Olympic-distance event: a 1,500 m swim, 40 km bike ride, and 10 km run. Individuals can compete solo or in relay teams, opening the field to more than just experienced triathletes completing the full race alone. Chip timing is employed, and the race has a 4-hour overall cut-off. Cyclists must complete the bike segment within 3 hours of the start. The swim takes place in the ria, commencing between the garden and the Clube de Vela da Costa Nova. The bike course consists of four out-and-back laps from Costa Nova to the first Vagueira roundabout, allowing supporters to view riders multiple times. The run route stays near the transition area, utilizing the bike path and pedestrian walkway around the Jardim of Costa Nova, alongside the ria. Age-group categories range from teenage divisions to 70-plus, with a paratriathlete category for younger competitors. Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each age group and team.
Running: Locals run Aveiro like a flat coastal base, with lagoon air and enough out-and-back options for Z2. Aveiro Runners, Arrifana Running, and BBG Runners give the district its group-run backbone. The route covers 78 km and climbs 70 m, so it suits steady work more than mountain legs. Marathon de l'Europe, SAND RUN, and Corrida das Areias work as anchor events nearby. Trail Terras de Oiã and Ultra Trail Serra da Freita 20anos pull runners inland when singletrack and harder vert sound better.
Cycling: Locals ride because Aveiro is very flat, and the city centre makes daily spinning easy with about 350 BUGAs running from 10:00 to 19:00. NaturRia cycling paths keep the riding coastal, quiet, and close to the lagoon. The golden route runs 234 km with the Vouga Ecotrail, and the green route covers 194 km for bike or foot. Murtosa gives the quay-to-quay feel, and the Route of the quays runs 11 km toward the Atlantic coastline. Serra da Freita holds the real climbs, while Costa Nova Triathlon works as the anchor hit-out.
Season: The season has a coastal rhythm, but the brief does not name exact best months, so locals plan around the flat terrain and the lagoon instead. Summer brings Clube Nortada activity at Cais da Mamaparda, where the water temperature sits around 26 degrees Celsius. Runners keep base miles easy near the Ria de Aveiro, and cyclists use the flat city for Z2 before heading inland for bite. Winter has no listed change in the brief, so the honest move is the same: use Aveiro for steady volume, then choose Serra da Freita when you want harder legs.
