Aveiro's flat terrain and canal network make it ideal for cycling, with the Route Heart of the Ria and Christmas Route following the lagoon and wetland paths around the city. Runners find mostly pancake-flat courses here, but the Bairrada Ultra Marathon and surrounding region offer gravel and rural routes inland toward the wine region 20km east, which rises to 150m elevation. The Bike and Run FitMe duathlon uses the canal towpaths and nearby coastal roads, blending Aveiro's water-level cycling with accessible running terrain.
