The 16th MTB Raid SodiGás – Margens do Cávado begins and ends beside the Cávado River at Praia Fluvial de Merelim S. Paio, in Braga, Portugal. It is a May morning mountain bike event featuring a timed 45 km raid, a 25 km non-competitive family ride, and a walk that starts half an hour after the cyclists. The main raid presents medium physical and technical difficulty, while the family ride is low difficulty and open to younger riders from age 14. The routes traverse forest trails and rural paths through several local parishes, positioning this as an off-road community raid rather than a road cycling race. The competitive field is divided into men’s and women’s categories, including elite, masters, gravel, and e-bike divisions, with chip timing for the race. Trophies are awarded to category podiums, the best team based on the combined time of its top three riders, and the first rider to reach a designated mountain point; surprise prizes are also drawn among participants. The event limits entries to 500 and accommodates families and walkers, aligning with the organizers’ emphasis on active leisure and group spirit.
The II Merelim São Paio Aquathlon takes place in Merelim, Portugal, in late August. It is organized under the Federação de Triatlo de Portugal and is part of the national multisport calendar, not a local fun run. The event features one race with individual and team entries available in various distances and formats. As it is linked to national championship and club-series competitions, participants may range from beginners and club athletes to more experienced triathlon competitors.
Running: Locals run Braga from Parque da Rodovia when they want simple base miles. The trail by Rio Este river starts from that park and goes all the way to Bosch. Parque da Ponte gives you a lake loop, and one lap around the lake is about 600 meters. Trail runners go up the Bom Jesus mountain, from there to Sameiro, then Santa Marta. GR46 Grande Rota da Serras dos Picos gives you a 30k loop around Braga. Sete Fontes has Trilho das Fontes, and that marked loop runs 10k. SC Braga and ABC Braga sit in the local club scene. Saint-Sylvestre de Braga, Semi-Marathon de Braga, Corrida de São João de Braga, and Trail RFM Braga are the anchor starts.
Cycling: Cyclists in Braga get proper choice without leaving town for long. Locals spin the flat roads toward the Cávado River for an easy ride. Bom Jesus mountain gives the bigger effort, and Sameiro, Santa Marta, Monte Castro, and Monte das Caldas keep the climbing honest. The loop runs 3 km and gains 1,353 m, so it works as a hard endurance day. The shorter loop runs 2 km and gains 548 m when you want a shorter punch. Bike Brothers is the name you hear for group rides. The 16th MTB Raid SodiGás - Margens do Cávado and Rampa da Falperra are the anchor race days.
Season: Braga works best when you respect the season and keep the plan simple. The best months sit outside the hottest summer blocks and the wet, frosty winter stretch. Summer feels hotter here than the coastal cities because Braga sits some distance from the ocean. Locals shift intervals earlier, keep Z2 rides toward the Cávado River, and save Bom Jesus efforts for cooler hours. Winter brings significant precipitation, and frost usually forms between three and four months of the year. Runners stay closer to Parque da Rodovia, Parque da Ponte, Ecovia, and Rio Este. Cyclists pick road days carefully and keep singletrack or cyclocross work flexible.
