Vuelta a Burgos

The Vuelta a Burgos is a short road-cycling stage race held in Spain's Burgos province, typically in August. The men's event is on the UCI ProSeries calendar as a 2.Pro race, attracting WorldTeams, ProTeams, and Continental teams. It originated in the 1940s, took its current form in the 1980s, and has been fully professional since 1987. The race often hinges on the final ascent to Lagunas de Neila, with a time trial and another mountain stage typically shaping the general classification. Stage finishes frequently occur in locations like Burgos, Medina de Pomar, Miranda de Ebro, and Roa. Marino Lejarreta holds the record for overall victories with four, while Alfonso Gutierrez has the most stage wins at seven. The women's race evolved from an amateur event into the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas, now part of the UCI Women's World Tour, featuring WorldTour and ProSeries teams competing on stages including Burgos Eclipsa, Patrimonio Enologico, Territorio Obarenes, and the queen stage, Caminos en Flor, leading to Lagunas de Neila. Its official theme song is Subiendo como el Chava Jimenez by M.O.D.A.

La Conquista Bike Packing

La Conquista Bike Packing is a point-to-point bikepacking race from Burgos to Valencia, designed for MTB and gravel bikes. Participants have up to 90 hours to reach the finish line, with solo, team, and relay options. The route includes 6 controls and 6 liquid aid stations, marking it as a long crossing of Spain with checkpoints and a strict time limit, rather than a short, closed-course mountain-bike event. The course utilizes a section of the Camino del Cid, providing a historical connection as it travels from Burgos towards the Mediterranean. The majority of the riding is off-road: 70% dirt track or path, 25% asphalt, and 5% trail. The statistics are substantial: 6,000 meters of climbing, 6,890 meters of descent, and a summit of 1,720 meters. The race features two categories, provides cloakroom and shower facilities, and offers food for riders upon arrival in Valencia.

Cross El Crucero

Cross El Crucero is a small race series in Burgos, Spain, offering three running distances: 9.5 km, 7 km, and 5.3 km. The races are currently marked as non-competitive, giving the format more of a local running day feel than a results-focused event. The available race information is limited, but the useful facts indicate a straightforward multi-distance setup for runners seeking a short course option in Burgos. The next edition is not yet confirmed. Information about cruise missiles should be disregarded as it stems from a mistaken association with the word "crucero."

About cycling & running in Burgos

Burgos Training Notes

Running: The River Arlanzón gives Burgos runners the easy daily line, with park miles through the green corridor and enough room for Z2 without drama. El Parque del Castillo works when locals want a short hill hit, because the climb to the Castillo de Burgos takes 10-15 minutes on paved pathways from behind the Cathedral. Fuentes Blancas gives the city another steady option for base miles. The local race calendar carries the scene more than named run clubs here. The 21K Burgos tras las Huellas del Cid feels like the anchor event, with Milla Ciudad de Burgos, Cross El Crucero, Cross Popular Carcedo de Burgos, and the Nocturna de Modúbar in the mix.

Cycling: The Vuelta a Burgos gives local riders a proper anchor race to talk about all year. Burgos riders use the city edge quickly, because the terrain shifts from River Arlanzón cruising to the hill of the castle and then out toward forests and mountains. La Conquista Bike Packing brings the demanding gravel mood, and Merindades Bike Race adds the mountain-bike pull. The climbs sit around the hill of the castle first, then farther out where routes wind through forests and mountains. The Fuentes Blancas park sits 5km west of the city, and Ribera del Duero sits one hour south for longer road days.

Season: The brief gives no named best months, so locals read Burgos by conditions more than calendar labels. Summer suits riding and running when the day behaves, because average highs sit around 27°C and the long light helps intervals, base miles, and late spins. Burgos can still bite in summer, and one hot afternoon once came with a 43-degree blast into the old town. Winter changes the whole plan, because the city gets chilly and windy from altitude and its inland position. Temperatures often drop below freezing, -5°C is normal enough, snow is common, and Z2 becomes the sensible call for both shoes and wheels.
