La Vuelta ciclista a España

La Vuelta a España is Spain’s men’s professional road cycling Grand Tour, a multi-stage race run across the country in late summer and early autumn. It is on the UCI WorldTour calendar alongside the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, so the start list comes from top UCI WorldTeams and selected ProTeams rather than local open-entry fields. The race is organized by Unipublic and has run since 1935, with wartime and economic interruptions in its early decades. The route changes from edition to edition, but the basic idea stays the same: riders race day after day over Spanish roads, with the overall winner decided by total time across all stages. Madrid often appears in the race story, and the event’s records give it a strong Spanish and European spine: Roberto Heras and Primoz Roglic share the all-time lead with four overall wins each, while Delio Rodriguez holds the stage-win record with 39. Recent winners such as Jonas Vingegaard underline that La Vuelta draws the same kind of climbers, time-trialists, and Grand Tour contenders who shape the sport’s biggest races.

Circuito MTB 7 Estrellas - Madrid, Ruta de las Encinas - 25km

Ruta de las Encinas is a 25 km mountain bike race held in Madrid, Spain, as part of the Circuito MTB 7 Estrellas series. While Runedia categorizes it as a summer event, the specific race date requires confirmation via the event website to aid in planning. The event listing provides Madrid city coordinates but omits start and finish locations, elevation gain, and certified distance. The course map is available for download or viewing in GPX or KML formats. This marks the race's 16th edition. It is listed on Runedia under popular, mountain, and Madrid race categories. Registration is managed via an external site, and a public race wall is available for updates or corrections.

Bh Madrid-Segovia

Bh Madrid-Segovia is a point-to-point BTT mountain bike race from central Madrid to Segovia, listed for early June with the exact date still unconfirmed. Riders start at the Torres de Madrid and aim for one of Spain’s clearest finish-line landmarks: the Acueducto de Segovia. The field is capped at 3,000 participants, and the race is chip-timed. The course distance is not officially homologated, so it reads more like a practical mountain bike challenge than a record-chasing event. The race is in its thirteenth edition and sits within a circuit, though the available listing does not name the circuit. Finish-line food is provided, and the basics are covered with wardrobe and massage services; the listing also notes that the race is not tied to a charitable cause.

About cycling & running in Madrid

Madrid Training Notes

Running: Locals run the daily stuff in Madrid Rio, Casa de Campo, El Retiro, Parque del Oeste, and Paseo de la Castellana. Madrid Rio gives nearly 10 km of paths along the Manzanares River. El Retiro has a loop around the whole park, and it is easy to get in a 6-8 km run without seeing the same thing twice. El Retiro has a 2 km running track. Don’t Die Madrid Running Club meets every Sunday. Madrid Runners meet Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. We Run Madrid meets Wednesdays and Saturdays. Parkrun Retiro anchors Saturday with a timed 5K at 9:00 AM. Anchor races include Madrid Marathon, San Silvestre Vallecana, Carrera de la Mujer, Rock 'n' Roll Madrid races, and Vuelta a la Casa de Campo.

Cycling: Locals ride base miles on the Green Cycle Belt, Casa de Campo, and the Carril bici de Colmenar. Casa de Campo sits on the west bank of the River Manzanares and covers more than 1,700 hectares. The Carril bici de Colmenar takes riders out of Madrid toward the Guadarrama mountain range. Madrid Sierra Cycling Group runs morning weekend rides in the Sierra, with Navacerrada, Rascafria, and Miraflores in the mix. The climbs sit around Puerto de Navacerrada, Morcuera, Canencia, and the Sierra de Madrid. The Miraflores loop climbs Morcuera, drops to Rascafría, cuts toward Lozoya, climbs Canencia, and returns to Miraflores at about 80 km. Anchor events include Bh Madrid-Segovia, La Vuelta ciclista a España, and Circuito MTB 7 Estrellas - Madrid, Ruta de las Encinas - 25km.

Season: April to June and September to October suit both runners and riders in central Spain. Madrid sits at 650 m, so easy Z2 can feel crisp even when the sun is out. Summer gives hot, dry days, and July and August are the months locals try to avoid for bigger rides and long runs. Locals shift intervals, base miles, and steady spins to the early morning or the last few hours of sunlight. Winter brings cool air from December to February, with frequent frosts, sporadic snowfalls, and cold mornings. Winter temps top out around 8°C, so gloves matter for both sports.
