About cycling & running in BilbaoBilbao Training Notes
Running: The route covers 9km with 66 meters of gain. The city centre makes Z2 simple with waterfront parks, manicured promenades, and long sidewalks. Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park, Etxeberria Park, Miribilla Park, and Europa Parkea handle short loops and weekday intervals. Europa Parkea gives a 2km perimeter loop near Txurdinaga with 67m of gain. The climb is 1km with 716 meters of gain when legs need climbing. Running Club Bilbao meets every Tuesday in the center of Bilbao. Saturday mornings bring 5km and 3km routes around the center. Bilbao Night Running Fest, Hiri Krosa Bilbao, and Carrera Santurce-Bilbao work as anchor races.
Cycling: Locals ride the Nervión River path when they want an easy cruise, then head into the surrounding Basque hills for a bigger effort. The Bidegorri Barakaldo-Gallarta-Galdames keeps things interesting because the last section turns into a gravel greenway. The Bidegorri Barakaldo-Muskiz suits steady base miles. Barakaldo-Portugalete-Las Arenas-Sopela-Gorliz gives the more daring crowd about 40km toward the coast. Bilbao grupo salidas de Gravel y carretera runs gravel and road rides, with past days toward Mungia, Elordui, Gaztelugatxe, Sollube, Morga, Gernika, Amurrio, Orduña, and Alto Angulo. The Bilbao to Astoreka, Mungia, and Lezama loop covers 71km with 490m of gain. The climbs sit in the Basque hills around Artxanda, Avril, Kobetas, Pagasarri, Arraiz, Ganeta, El Vivero, and Ganguren. Orbea Gran Fondo Vitoria-Gasteiz, Bilbao Triathlon, and Marcha del Mamut make good anchor events.
Season: Bilbao stays mild most of the year, so locals can keep running and riding without a huge off-season. Summer feels best for dry work because the Bay of Biscay moderates the heat and average maximums sit around 25°C. July gives the cleanest block for intervals, long rides, and gran fondo prep because rainfall drops to about 20mm. October to April brings the rainiest stretch, and November usually feels the wettest. Winter still works for Z2 because minimum temperatures average between 6°C and 8°C. Sleet shows up more often than snow, about 10 days per year, so locals move some runs to the promenades and some rides to the Bidegorri when the hills get messy.
