Hisingen/Västkusten Runt

Hisingen Runt and Västkusten Runt are road cycling events based in Gothenburg, centered on Hisingen, the island north of the Göta älv river. Hisingens Cykelklubb organizes the event annually, offering three routes: Hisingens Hälsorunda (approx. 25 km), Hisingen Runt (50 km), and Västkusten Runt (approx. 125 km). The club describes it as Gothenburg’s cycling race, created by cyclists for cyclists. The routes are designed for safe riding on quality roads and cycle paths, avoiding tram lines, unpaved surfaces, and heavy vehicle traffic. Hisingen Runt started in the late 1970s with 150 participants and evolved into a larger event featuring multiple distances, a family quiz route, and a children’s race named Papricaloppet. The 50 km Hisingen Runt is now the main ride, with Västkusten Runt serving as the longer option for those seeking a more extensive cycling day. The event's starting location has varied across Gothenburg, including Björlanda, Frihamnen, and near the Gothenburg Opera, before its return to Hisingen. Hisingen Runt is also included in Göteborgsklassikern, a local challenge comprising three events: cycling, swimming, and running.

Gothenburg MTB Race

The Gothenburg MTB Race takes place at Skatås Motionsområde, a sports and recreation area located approximately 3 km from central Gothenburg, Sweden. This event is a two-day mountain bike cross-country Olympic race, featuring laps instead of a point-to-point course. The main Saturday program, which is part of the UCI Mountain Bike Continental Series, includes Elite, U23, and Junior categories. Sunday's events focus on masters and youth racing, ensuring the weekend caters to a range of participants beyond just top-level professionals. The event also serves as the Nordic Championships in MTB XCO. Elite and junior riders compete for these titles on Saturday, with masters and older youth classes racing for them on Sunday. While international elite riders participate, CK Master organizes the weekend to foster development and community by providing dedicated championship races for youth and masters categories. The event also functions as a preparation for an upcoming European Championships, adding significance to the Gothenburg course and organization beyond that of a typical domestic race.

ÖTILLÖ Gothenburg

ÖTILLÖ Gothenburg is part of the ÖTILLÖ swimrun series. In this series, pairs of athletes race together over a marked course, alternating between trail running and open-water swimming. The original ÖTILLÖ race takes place annually in September in Sweden’s Stockholm archipelago. Teams cover approximately 70 km: about 60 km running and 10 km swimming across 25 islands. Swimrun has a unique, practical rule: competitors typically run in wetsuits and swim in shoes, minimizing gear changes between land and water. The sport originated from a bet between friends, using a napkin map of the archipelago. Teams had to visit several restaurants between the start and finish. This initial challenge lasted over 24 hours. The organized race later retained the island-to-island concept in its name: ÖTILLÖ translates to “island to island” in Swedish. Early participants experimented with surfboards, snorkels, fins attached to shoes, and homemade tow floats before equipment evolved into the current swimrun style. Today, the competition includes women's, men's, and mixed teams, and the ÖTILLÖ World Series extends to races outside Sweden.

About cycling & running in Gothenburg

Gothenburg Base Miles By The Kattegat

Running: Locals run Gothenburg from Slottsskogen, Skatås, Delsjön, Änggårdsbergen, Hisingsparken, and the paths by Göta älv. Skatås gives you lit loops of 2.5, 5, and 8 km, plus terrain trails of 10 and 18 km when you want proper trail legs. Delsjön gives about 10 km for one lap, and the hilly paths can be a real challenge. Göteborg Running Club meets every Tuesday at 18:00, usually in Slottsskogen, and GRC | Trail starts at Botaniska trädgården. Göteborg Marathon, Skatås ryggar, Sisjöloppet, Vårruset Göteborg, and ÖTILLÖ Gothenburg keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride out of the city centre fast when they want base miles, because Säröbanan sits a little outside and runs nice and flat with a view toward the Kattegat. Kattegattleden gives the bigger coastal line, and the archipelago works when you want relaxation with just the right amount of exercise. Delsjön gives about 10 km for one MTB lap, while Skatås and Vättlefjäll keep the singletrack side busy. Hisingens CK, Hisingens cykelklubb, and CXGBG cover the club scene. Gothenburg MTB Race and Hisingen Runt / Västkusten Runt are the anchor events. Bergsjöbacken is quite brutal, and Sisjövägen is steeper toward Sisjön.

Season: Summer suits both sports best here, because Gothenburg gets warm, pleasant days and 18 hours and 5 minutes of daylight. Locals use those long evenings for Z2 rides down the coast, intervals in Slottsskogen, trail runs in Skatås, and sunset spins from Stora Amundön back toward the centre. Winter changes the rhythm more than the routes, because cold wind arrives and snow mainly turns up from December to March. Roads are generally fine until November or December, when sand and salt start, and runners keep using lit loops while cyclists choose paths, hills, and steadier sessions.
