Stockholm Marathon

The Stockholm Marathon begins on Lidingövägen outside Stockholm's Olympic Stadium and concludes within the same 1912 Olympic venue. This 42.195 km road race crosses central Stockholm, typically held in late May or early June, and stands as Sweden's largest marathon by participation and elite fields. Over 18,000 runners typically register, with approximately 15,000 starting. The event has been a Swedish marathon championship race since the early 1980s, accommodating both recreational runners and the nation's elite marathoners. The course winds through seven central districts: Östermalm, Vasastan, Kungsholmen, Gamla stan, Norrmalm, Djurgården, and Södermalm. Participants run through Gamla stan, the old town featuring 14th-century structures, and dedicate nearly 8 km to Södermalm, Stockholm's largest island. Djurgården contributes historical parkland, with history dating to the 15th century. The race originated in the late 1970s with just over 2,000 registered runners, including 69 women, and now attracts international participants. Hässelby SK and Spårvägens FK are the organizers, and runners have 6 hours and 30 minutes to complete the course.

Stadiongirot

Stadiongirot is a gravel cycling race in Stockholm, located at Hellasgården instead of the countryside. It is a competitive event designed for riders seeking an organized challenge without an elite-only start. The race begins at 09:00, with multiple distance options available. The course features gravel roads, including a route approximately 19 kilometers long. Its primary appeal is the opportunity to ride gravel within Stockholm, using Hellasgården as a distinct outdoor venue on the city's outskirts. The format accommodates cyclists looking for a short, accessible gravel race, as well as those treating it as a structured race-day effort.

About cycling & running in Stockholm

Stockholm Training Notes

Running: Locals run Stockholm by island, bridge, and water. Kungsholmen keeps the easy Z2 honest with flat paths by Lake Mälaren and routes like Kungsholmen runt. Södermalm has city vibes, cafés, views, and enough hills for intervals. Djurgården gives long runs space, and its non-paved routes suit trail days inside the Royal National City Park. Hagaparken works when you want softer ground without leaving town. Stockholm Run Club, Run Collective Stockholm, IF Linnéa löpning, Team Nordic Trail, and Hagaparken Parkrun keep the week social. Anchor races include Stockholm Marathon, Stockholm Ecotrail, Midnattsloppet, STHLM 10, and Stockholms Brantaste.

Cycling: Locals ride Stockholm because the bike paths matter here and they run along the harbor. Djurgården by bike feels easy, green, and low-stress, while around Södermalm gives more bite. Ängby Cycling Club departs from Ängbyplan at 8:30 on Sundays all year round, and the rides come back for fika after about 2.5 to 3 hours. Cycling in Stockholm runs road, beginner, social, mountain bike, and gravel rides mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. Färingö carries summer road miles, while Stäket and Järvafältet take the fall and winter gravel. Södermalm, Mariaberget, Skinnarviksberget, Katarinavägen, Hornsgatan/Lundagatan, and Västerbron hold the climbing.

Season: Summer gives Stockholm its best training block. Late May to mid-July keeps the nights from going completely dark, and midsummer gives the city more than 18 hours of daylight. Locals use those long evenings for base miles, harbor spins, and runs that finish near the water. Pleasantly warm summer weather makes Djurgården, Kungsholmen, and Skeppsholmen feel almost too easy. Winter changes the rhythm, but it does not shut things down. Stockholm keeps average temperatures generally above 0°C for much of the year, and annual snow cover usually lasts between 75 and 100 days. Winter Run and gravel toward Stäket keep the legs honest.
