Black River Run, 100 miles

Black River Run is an urban ultra in Västerås, Sweden, with the 100-mile race covering approximately 161 km. The event takes place in September and also includes shorter distances: 50 miles, 48 km, 32.2 km, and 10 miles. This setup allows both long-distance ultra runners and participants seeking a shorter trail run to compete on the same day. Everything centers on a varied 10-mile lap. This lap begins, winds through, and concludes at Västerås SOK's clubhouse, Orientalen. The course incorporates technical trails, jogging paths, hiking routes, gravel roads, and some asphalt sections. All finishers receive a medal, and anyone completing the 100 miles in under 24 hours is awarded a buckle. Västerås Löparklubb organizes the race, and the start/finish area provides changing rooms, showers, and a sauna.

Hallsta Triathlon

Hallsta Triathlon is a triathlon weekend held in Hallstahammar, Västmanland. Children's races take place on Saturday, followed by the main competition program on Sunday. Mälardalens Triathlonklubb is the organizer. The event offers a range of distances: short and long recreational races, relay options for both, a para recreational category, and official competition classes for ages 14 and up. The competitive focus includes sprint drafting, featuring Swedish Championship races for senior, junior, and youth athletes. These championships also contribute points to the Nordic Cup and Swedish Triathlon Cup, attracting serious young competitors alongside senior elites. Age-group athletes compete in the Olympic distance up to age 79, with a sprint option available for those aged 80 and older. Children up to 15 participate in the Tri4Fun race, adding a broader club atmosphere to the weekend beyond just the championship events.

Nordansjö Nattultra

Nordansjö Nattultra is a July night ultra held in Nordansjö, near Norberg, Sweden. The primary event covers 60 km, run entirely after dark. Norbergs OK organizes the race, which begins and ends at their club cabin in Nordansjö. Two shorter races are also featured: Tjuvstarten by Ullmax, spanning 12 km, and Mini-Ultra, a 1.5 km distance. As this race series is in its second year, it presents itself as a challenge built by a local club rather than a long-standing event. The 60 km course consists of five loops, intended to simplify distance management for both participants and their support crews compared to a single point-to-point route. Organizers characterize the paths as straightforward and suitable for a broad spectrum of runners, from seasoned ultrarunners to individuals attempting a longer summer race for the first time. Tjuvstarten by Ullmax is included in the Södra Svealands Löparserie. The main 60 km race introduces a competitive element with a Bergspris, awarded to the first runner reaching the summit of Håberget.

About cycling & running in Västerås

Västerås Training Notes

Running: Locals call Västerås pretty flat, and they are right until you start hunting bumps. The course is a 6 km mixed loop three times over uphill and downhill sections. Westeros trail running society built the Djäkne city trail on Djäkneberget, and the full 50 km racks up 1500 meters of elevation. VarjeSteg meets Wednesdays at 18:15 by the parking lot at Expandia Arena for 60-75 minute sessions. Västerås Marathon, Black River Run, Vårruset, Fire Night Run, Å-Varvet, and Nordansjö Nattultra give the calendar its anchors.

Cycling: Locals spin along the Lake Mälaren promenade when the legs need easy Z2. The route covers 4 km with 418 meters of climbing. The route covers 5 km and gains 664 meters, so it feels like a proper gran fondo day on mixed gravel and road. The loop is a 2 km lap. Rocklund Forest has paths with SM status, Vedbobacken runs downhill with the lift cage in summer, and Anundsloppet plus Västeråscykeln 2026 are the anchor rides.

Season: July is the best bet, and the city feels built for base miles when Lake Mälaren is open and the evenings stay useful. Summer brings warm but jumpy weather, with July days mostly around 22°C and sometimes pushing past 25°C or even 30°C. Locals keep a shell ready, then still ride Björnöbron to Gäddeholm or run Djäkneberget intervals when showers pass. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports, because snow can stay for months and Lake Mälaren usually freezes from December until the end of March. Runners keep the streak alive, and cyclists swap fast road plans for steadier work, MTB, or cyclocross-style handling.
