Russet Runners Marden 10K

The Russet Runners Marden 10K is a licensed, marshalled road 10K held in and around Marden, a Kent village set amidst country lanes. It typically takes place on a late-spring morning, with race headquarters at The Willows Business Park on Pattenden Lane and registration opening before the start. The race is organized by Russet Runners, the local Marden club, and fits the practical club-race description: measured distance, marshals, signage, chip collection at registration, toilets, refreshments, bag storage, and clear rules regarding headphones. The course begins and ends in Marden, utilizing the lanes surrounding the village, with temporary road closures within Marden for the initial 2km. It is predominantly flat, featuring only 34m of total elevation gain and a few mild inclines, making it suitable for runners aiming for a fast 10K as well as those seeking a simple local road race. Water stations are positioned halfway and at the finish. All finishers receive medals, with trophies awarded to the top male and female runners, age-group winners, and the leading team. The course records are currently under 35 minutes for men and just over 40 minutes for women.

Solstice at the Lakes Trail Runs

Solstice at the Lakes challenges runners to complete as many laps as possible of a 2.5 km marked loop at Leybourne Lakes Country Park in Kent within their chosen race duration. This timed trail event is centered around the summer solstice, offering 6-hour solo, 12-hour solo, and 24-hour solo races. The 24-hour format also includes options for pairs and team relays. The principle is straightforward: each lap contributes to the total, and the runner or relay team achieving the greatest distance in their category wins. The loop consists of maintained trail, gravel, and tarmac paths, providing a more controlled environment than a fell race but remaining off-road for a true trail running feel. The 24-hour race commences at midday and concludes at midday the following day, while the 12-hour race spans the evening, night, and early morning. Runners have the flexibility to manage their race without hourly cut-offs, fixed restart times, or a required pace. The race village provides amenities including food, drink, restrooms, changing facilities, rest areas, crew seating, live lap tracking, official timing, and medical assistance. All participants who finish at least one lap receive a medal, making the event accessible for newcomers while offering ample opportunity for experienced ultrarunners to aim for significant distances.

About cycling & running in Maidstone

Maidstone Training Notes

Running: Locals run the River Medway towpath when they want easy rhythm without thinking too hard. The towpath gives you 5km of steady riverside work. Maidstone River Park parkrun starts and finishes at Kent Life, then uses an out-and-back course along the towpath. The surface underfoot is mostly tarmac, but there are some sections of gravel. Maidstone Harriers meet on Wednesday evenings for GPS guided 5K to 10K runs and proper tempo, threshold, and interval sessions. B2R Maidstone meets at St Johns Primary School on Tuesday and Thursday at 19:00. Maidstone Riverside 10k & 10 Mile is the anchor event.

Cycling: Locals ride the Medway Valley Path when they want Z2 base miles and a gentle spin. The Medway towpath can be cycled from Aylesford, through Maidstone, and out the other side to Barming. The North Downs give the bigger effort, and Bluebell Hill, Detling, Pilgrims’ Way, and Broom Hill keep the legs honest. The Challenging Gravel Loop starts from Maidstone and gives you 85 km with 1,161 meters of ascent. K20 Cycling Club and San Fairy Ann Cycling Club keep the bunch rides moving. San Fairy Ann CC brings Early Spring Time Trials, Spring Crits in the Park, and The Man of Kent. Maidstone CycleFest is the local anchor.

Season: Spring and autumn suit Maidstone best because the legs get steady weather for running, gravel, and longer road rides. Summer in Kent stays cool, and the Maidstone - Isle of Sheppey route has seen 26°C with light WSW wind at 1m/s. Locals use Mote Park, Whatman Park, and Maidstone River Park for relaxed miles when the light hangs around. The towpath can get a bit splashy after rain, so runners slip on trail shoes and cyclists expect some muddy sections. Winter stays mild by Kent standards, and club nights shift toward consistency, Z2, and shorter intervals. The river paths still work, but the North Downs feel more like strength work.
