Great North Run

The Great North Run is a half marathon from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields, held in North East England each September since 1981. It is the world’s largest half marathon, with participation growing from 12,000 runners in its first year to over 50,000 currently. Brendan Foster, Olympic 10,000 m bronze medallist and BBC Sport commentator, conceived the race, and it remains focused on mass participation rather than solely elite runners. Junior and mini races are also held on the Saturday before the main event. The course begins on the A167 in Newcastle, crosses the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead, and follows main roads east toward South Shields. Runners proceed along the Felling Bypass, turn toward Leam Lane, pass through Harton and Marsden, finishing on the seafront at South Shields. The race has also featured significant elite performances: it hosted the first IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, and course records are 58:56 for men (Martin Mathathi) and 1:04:28 for women (Brigid Kosgei). However, the majority of participants are club runners, charity participants, first-time runners, and individuals aiming to complete the distance from the city to the coast.

Pretty Muddy Middlesbrough

Pretty Muddy Middlesbrough is a Race for Life 5K held at Stewart Park in Middlesbrough, beginning around midday from the TS7 8AR entrance. This is a charity run with a muddy, obstacle-style course, distinct from a typical road race. Funds raised support cancer research via Race for Life, with GoFundMe available for donations. The course begins and ends on grass, winding through Stewart Park on varied paths and grassy sections. Participants will pass the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum and the play park. The route remains within the park, avoiding town roads. The event also features a Pretty Mud Kids Race and a Fun Run, accommodating families alongside adults participating in the 5K.

Pine Forest 5K Trail

The Pine Forest 5K Trail is a 5K trail race held at Flatts Lane Country Park in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. The start is located at TS6 0NN. This event is part of a race series and is scheduled for July, welcoming both experienced runners and beginners. The course winds through the country park, offering participants views of Roseberry Topping and the Saltburn Cliffs. With results available from previous years, the race has a history as an established local event. The race listing also directs participants to a GoFundMe fundraiser, indicating that charity running is incorporated into the event.

About cycling & running in Middlesbrough

Boro Base Miles

Running: Middlesbrough gives runners easy laps from the city centre, with Albert Park and Stewart Park doing the steady parkrun work. The Tees Barrage route runs 84 km with only +1 m, then stretch out on Stonecross Loop or Croxdale Extended. Stonecross Loop or Croxdale Extended cover 55 km and +202 m when Z2 needs a bite. Bororunners bring four sessions every week, all abilities welcome, with reps, hill sprints, tempo and track intervals. More Than A Run keeps it social. Middlesbrough 10K, Ali Brownlee 5K and the Middlesbrough Half Marathon are the anchor races.

Cycling: Middlesbrough suits riders who like options without much faff. Cleveland Wheelers CC is the obvious road start, with weekly Sunday club runs attracting up to 50 riders and midweek training or social rides split by ability. Godleys cycles in Nunthorpe run regular road and gravel group rides, FLAB rides suit slower social miles, and Bike scene in Guisborough covers MTB. The Yarm and Sadberge Loop gives 49 km and 185 m for base miles. The Sunderland Coastal Escape gives 113 km and 821 m when the legs want a gran fondo feel. The Cleveland Hills hold the climbs, with Warsett Hill, High Godfalter Hill and Carlton Bank doing the damage.

Season: July and August are the best months here, because Boro gets mild summer highs and the riding stays light enough for evening miles. More Than A Run puts on regular 10k training sessions over summer at Middlesbrough Sports Village, and Cleveland Wheelers CC has midweek rides plus the TT season running from spring through autumn. Summer weekends work well for Albert Park, Stewart Park, gravel towards Guisborough, or a longer coastal day. Winter changes the rhythm. Cleveland Wheelers CC moves formal training sessions to Middlesbrough Cycling Circuit, and Bororunners still keep weekly running sessions going when December and January feel sharp.
