Great South Run

The Great South Run is a 10-mile road race held in Portsmouth, typically in mid-October. The start and finish lines are located at the north end of Avenue De Caen. Its 10-mile distance falls between a 10K and a half marathon, offering a suitable challenge for runners seeking a longer distance than a 10K but not yet ready for 13.1 miles. The course is known for being relatively flat and fast, appealing to those aiming for personal bests, as well as charity participants and newcomers to racing. Participants must be at least 16 years old on race day, and their race numbers include an integrated timing chip. The route incorporates Portsmouth’s maritime heritage, guiding runners through the historic dockyard area where they can see landmarks like HMS Victory. However, filming and photography are not permitted within the naval base itself. Entertainment zones are situated at each mile marker, and local residents line the course to offer encouragement. The event originated in Southampton before relocating to Portsmouth after its inaugural year, and it is part of Brendan Foster’s Great Run series. Notable past elite participants include Paula Radcliffe, Luke Kibet, Joseph Ebuya, and Eilish McColgan, with the mass participation field sometimes exceeding 20,000 runners.

About cycling & running in Portsmouth

Portsmouth Coastal Training Notes

Running: Locals keep running simple here, with Southsea Seafront starting from South Parade Pier and the Portsmouth Coastal Pathway running from Eastney to Portchester. Old Portsmouth to Gunwharf Quays gives you a neat city-centre spin from near the Square Tower. Milton Common Run gives you 9 miles with some grassy terrain when Z2 needs a softer edge. Hilsea Lines keeps runners on paths along the northern shore. Baffins Fit Club meets Monday evenings in Baffins and leans social. The Racers hit Tuesday speed work and Thursday 7-9 mile runs. The Great South Run is the anchor event everyone knows.

Cycling: Portsmouth North End Cycling Club is the main wheel to follow, with Saturday traffic-free rides at 09:00, Sunday rides at 09:00, and Monday traffic-free rides at 19:45. Locals ride and race from Portsmouth into Havant Borough. Shipwright's Way takes riders from Hayling Island to QECP and on to Bentley when base miles need a bigger day. Portsdown Hill gives the nearest proper lift off the island. Harvesting Lane on Butser and Stock's Lane both ride more like gravel climbs. Deviation Duathlon Fareham and Soggy Bottom Triathlon 2025 Reverse give multisport legs a target.

Season: Spring and summer are the best months, because Portsmouth gets more sunshine than most of the British Isles and July can touch 25°C. July usually gives riders and runners a 21°C average maximum and a 13°C average minimum, so early Z2 and evening intervals both work well. Southsea can still mean running into a headwind, so locals keep a layer handy. Autumn has its own personality, with September highs around 19°C and October highs around 15°C. Winter stays mild, with January averaging 8°C by day and 2°C at night, while light frost and rare snow change grip more than ambition.
