The Drop Sheffield begins with participants surrendering their phones, watches, and maps. They are then blindfolded and transported by bus to an undisclosed drop point. This self-navigated race near Sheffield offers 6, 10, and 15 mile options, measured as straight-line distances to the event centre. Consequently, the actual distance covered by participants is typically much greater. No course markers, route instructions, or designated paths are provided across South Yorkshire. Each runner must determine their location, select appropriate roads or trails, and navigate back using their own judgment instead of electronic devices. This format blends racing with a navigational challenge.
Rother Valley Relays is a club relay held at Rother Valley Country Park in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, scheduled for May. Each participant runs a 5K leg, making it a short, team-focused race instead of an individual long-distance competition. The course consists of closed roads, tarmac paths, and gravel paths within the park. Teams from the region participate, and this marks the event's sixth year. A charity fundraising option is also available via GoFundMe.
Running: Locals run Sheffield by mixing parks, canals, woodland, and proper hills. The Outdoor City Run Routes give over 30 signposted options across 15 locations, so Z2 never gets boring. The Porter Valley route runs 4km with the river doing good company work. The Neepsend loop gives speedier sessions about a mile round a legendary training area. Ecclesall Woods sends runners towards the Peak District when base miles need bite. Sheffield Running Club, Hallamshire Harriers, Steel City Striders, Totley AC, Strideout, Scrambled Legs, and RunTogether groups all keep the week busy. Sheffield 10K, Sheffield Half Marathon, Round Sheffield Run, and TEN10TEN Sheffield sit nicely as anchor events.
Cycling: Locals ride Sheffield as the Outdoor City and City of 7 Hills, with the Peaks as our playground. Sharrow CC, Sheffrec CC, Whirlow Wheelers, Rutland CC, Sheffield Phoenix CC, Biking Belles, Yorkshire Rose CC, and Sheffield Tuesdays Cycling Club give every sort of bunch. Cake Rides meet Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the bottom of Bents Road. Sheffield CTC runs Sundays and summer Wednesday evenings. Worrall Wheelers rides reach 30 to 40 miles midweek and up to 60 miles at the weekend. The climbs sit west towards Stanage, Win Hill, Monsall Hill, Damflask Reservoir, Derwent Reservoir, More Hall, and Broomhead. Monyash Road Race and Monsall Hill Climb keep the race legs honest.
Season: Spring, summer, and autumn suit Sheffield best for runners and riders. Summer gives road cycling, downhill mountain biking, longer Peak District loops, and steady base miles through the UK’s greenest city. Locals use warm evenings for intervals around Neepsend, canal runs, Sheffield CTC Wednesday rides, and those brisk chain gang miles when training mode kicks in. Winter changes the feel but not the habit. Cross-country gets good when the ground stays firm, dry, cold, and sunny. Runners lean into woodland, parkland, and structured loops, while cyclists keep the Z2 rolling and save the bigger climbs for clear days.
