Race For Life Wigan

Race for Life Wigan is a 5K evening charity run held at Haigh Woodland Park in Wigan, Greater Manchester. The event begins at 7:00pm and is part of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life programme. The purpose is for participants to run, jog, or walk to raise money for research into beating cancer. The course follows tarmac paths, with the start and finish on hardstanding. The route heads downhill initially before an uphill return. A 3K option is available, and participants can set up fundraising via GoFundMe.

Walsh Two Lads Hill Race

The Walsh Two Lads Hill Race is a short fell race in Horwich, Bolton, starting beside the Bridge Inn at BL6 6AD. It is listed as a Category B Short race, covering 8.4km (about 5 miles) with 274m of climb. The 7:30pm start time gives it the character of an evening hill race rather than a full day on the fells. From the pub-side start, runners ascend onto the Pennines, heading for Two Lads before descending back to the start. The format is straightforward: a sharp climb, a specific hilltop objective, and a final descent into Horwich. Walsh sponsors the race, and published results across multiple editions indicate it is a regular local fell-running fixture with returning participants, not a one-off event.

Haigh Hall 4

Haigh Hall 4 is a 4-mile trail race held at Haigh Hall in Wigan, Greater Manchester, starting at 7:30pm on an early summer evening. The race utilizes the Haigh Hall grounds, presenting itself as a short, local trail event centered on the country house estate. The event is organized by Paul Carroll, and recent results indicate it has been held across multiple editions. Runners may also link their entry with GoFundMe fundraising. Haigh Hall provides the race with more historical context than many short trail runs: the current house was constructed for James Lindsay, 7th Earl of Balcarres, succeeding an older manor. It later came under the ownership of Wigan Council and is designated a Grade II* listed building, situated on an estate connected to Wigan’s coal and iron heritage.

About cycling & running in Wigan

Wigan Miles And Lanes

Running: Wigan gives runners proper choice from the city centre, Robin Park, Mesnes Park lake, Haigh Hall, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and the Whelley Loop Line. The area has 235 km of routes with 233m ascent when you want a full shift. Wigan Harriers Running Club meet most nights in and around the Wigan area. Tuesday brings Speed interval vo2 max session at 6:30 PM. Thursday brings Lactate Threshold training at 6:30 PM. Wigan Phoenix adds more vest-and-mud energy. Wigan 10K feels like the anchor event. Wigan Trail 10K, Haigh Hall 4, Race For Life Wigan, Blackrod Scarecrow 10K, and Walsh Two Lads Hill Race keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Riders get a good Wigan mix, with canal edges, traffic-free paths, gravel, and lanes that roll out toward Standish, Orrell, Abram, and Ince-in-Makerfield. Wigan Wheelers and Triathlon Club covers the serious club side for recreational riders, racing cyclists, and triathletes. Rainford gives them weekly 10 mile time trials in summer from May 7th and every Tuesday thereafter. Wigan Borough Community Cycling Club rolls from Trencherfield Mill every Tuesday and Thursday over roughly 20 to 25 miles of undulating on and off-road sections. The route near Standish runs 7 km with 164 m elevation gain. 0% max grade. Harrock Hill gives the climbers a proper target. Be Well, Wigan & Leigh Girls Cycling, Wheels For All, and Gearing Up widen the bunch.

Season: Summer suits both sports because the clubs are busy, the evenings are usable, and the Rainford 10 mile time trials give riders a weekly marker. Cycle Three Sisters lands on Wednesday 6 May and Tuesday 4 August in 2026, so crit legs get a closed-circuit hit. Runners get plenty from Haigh Hall 4, Wigan 10K, and the trail calendar when the paths are quick. Winter shifts the mood rather than stopping it. Wigan Harriers usually use the Brick Stadium for winter training. Locals still don their vests for a wet 6 miles. Santa Dash 4 Mile Trail Race falls on 20 December 2026, and Trails & Ales New Years Eve Fell Race lands on 31 December 2026.
