New River Rush Adventure Race

New River Rush is a 15-hour adventure race held in New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia. The clock starts in the morning and runs until late evening. It combines trekking, mountain biking, navigation, and guided whitewater rafting, meaning participants navigate varied terrain and don't just follow a marked path or aim for a standard time. The event provides solo, 2-person, 3-person, and 4-person team options. This structure allows seasoned adventure racers to compete intensely while offering a pathway for newer participants to enter with teammates. The course utilizes the Gorge extensively. Racers will bike on singletrack and backcountry trails, navigate on foot across rugged landscapes using rogaine principles, and raft New River rapids accompanied by guides. The rafting is an integral part of the race, not an optional add-on, which contributes to the entry fee. GRIT Adventure Racing, now in its third year, organizes the event. The organization's efforts are connected to veteran communities. Similar to other adventure races, New River Rush emphasizes strategic route selection, cooperation, and stamina alongside pure speed.

Thurmond Triathlon

The Thurmond Triathlon, a bike-paddle-run race in historic Thurmond, West Virginia, requires every participant to complete all three legs. It begins in the morning from the Dun Glen Day Use Area and is organized by Active Southern West Virginia. Participants can compete solo, as a duo, or as a team of three or more, with teams remaining together throughout the event and crossing the finish line as a unit. The format is designed to be accessible: a 2-mile bike ride, a 1.5-mile paddle, and a 2-mile run. The bike leg travels from the Historic Thurmond Depot to Stonecliff over a course of pavement and gravel, suggesting a mountain or hybrid bike is more suitable than a road bike. From Stonecliff, participants paddle back toward Dun Glen on moving water featuring small whitewater rapids and obstacles. Single and double inflatable kayak rentals are available for those not bringing their own short, self-propelled watercraft. The run proceeds from Dun Glen, looping around Thurmond, crossing the Thurmond bridge, and utilizing both pavement and gravel surfaces. Racers must wear helmets for biking and paddling, label their gear with duct tape and a race number, and exercise caution when crossing CSX railroad tracks. The event includes chip timing, water stops, awards by category, finisher medals for children, and post-race food.

About cycling & running in Beckley

Beckley Training Notes

Running: Locals run Beckley like a mountain-adjacent town, with easy days on the inner-city rail trail and McManus Trail and longer work on Run around the lake. The lake loop is 09 km and climbs 408 m, so it works for steady Z2 or a stubborn long run. Beckley Running Group meets Tuesdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM EST at Paul Cline Memorial Soccer Complex. The Beckley Half Marathon & 5K anchors the calendar, while New River Gorge Wilds Trail Run, Babcock Sticks & Stones 15K, and Rim to River 100 keep the trail crowd honest.

Cycling: Locals ride the Beckley, WV 37 mile loop when they want real base miles without leaving the paved-road mindset. The loop runs 61 km and gains 960 m, so the climbing shows up early and keeps coming. One climb runs 1.1 km and gains 86 m at a 6.4% grade, and one descent drops 103 m over 1.3 km at -7.0%. The route hits a maximum grade of 11.9%, so intervals can get spicy fast. The brief names no local cycling club, but New River Rush Adventure Race and Thurmond Triathlon give multisport riders an anchor.

Season: May, June, August, September, and October treat Beckley best for running and riding. The 700 m elevation keeps summer warm and humid but usually a few degrees cooler than lower places in West Virginia. Locals still start earlier in summer, keep bottles close, and save harder intervals for mornings. Winter changes the whole rhythm for both sports. Snow averages 760 mm per season, mostly from December to March, so runners use the rail trail and McManus Trail when footing allows, and cyclists shift toward shorter paved spins, trainer time, or careful Z2 between cold snaps.
