Beckley sits on the edge of the New River Gorge, where technical trail running dominates—the New River Gorge Wilds Trail Run is a 42km mountain course that's become a magnet for serious ultrarunners tackling West Virginia's rootiest terrain. The Beckley Half Marathon & 5K offers a more accessible option on road, but the region's real character emerges on the singletrack ridges above the gorge, where elevation changes of 300–400m per loop are the norm.
