Pocatello Marathon

The Pocatello Marathon, known as Running the Gap, is a fall race held in Pocatello, Idaho. The marathon begins on Hilltop Road. Covering 26.2 miles, the full marathon descends over 1,500 feet, appealing to runners seeking a fast downhill course or a long point-to-point run in eastern Idaho. The event weekend also features a half marathon, 10K, 5K, 1-mile race, and a 0.2-mile race. Wheelchair and handcycle divisions are available for the marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K. The course is USA Track & Field certified, and marathon times are eligible for Boston and New York qualifying. This downhill profile offers a practical advantage for runners with specific time goals. The inclusion of shorter races for children broadens the event beyond just the marathon. Club runners and general participants compete in the same race program. This series has been held for over twenty-four years, includes a pasta dinner, provides complimentary course and finish-line photo downloads, and allows runners to customize medals via the event store.

4 Peaks Gran Fondo

The 4 Peaks Gran Fondo is an Idaho road-bike event held in August. The full 4 Peaks option covers over 80 miles with nearly 8,000 feet of climbing. Organizers refer to it as the "Toughest Ride in Idaho." The format is unique: cyclists complete the entire road course, but only the uphill segments are timed. The full ride is designed for strong cyclists, those with high fitness levels, and, as the event humorously notes, the "casual masochist." A Single Peak option is also available, focusing on the climb to Crystal summit. This shorter option serves as a distinct challenge and a preparation ride for the full 4 Peaks route. Previous results are accessible, and participants can purchase event kits prior to race week.

About cycling & running in Pocatello

Pocatello Training Notes

Running: Locals run Pocatello like a trail town with a campus heartbeat. City Creek Trail System handles a lot of weekday dirt, and the City Creek - Over The Top Loop runs 9 miles while climbing from 4511 ft to 6096 ft. Gibson Jack Trail System, Mink Creek Trail System, Satterfield Trail System, and Scout Mountain Trail System keep base miles from getting stale. Pocatello Running Club brings together grizzled ultramarathoners and weekend joggers. Scout Mountain Ultras, Over the Top Trail Race, Pocatello Marathon, and the Pocatello 16 Miler give the calendar real anchors.

Cycling: Locals ride where the hills start fast. City Creek Trail System and Gibson Jack Trail System give mountain bikers singletrack close to town, while Edson Fichter Pond and the Portneuf Greenway work for easier spins. Barries weekly group bicycle rides roll through the warm-weather months, with a Tuesday Night Easy road ride and a Thursday Night No drop road ride. Gate City Grays adds more local kit in the mix. 4 Peaks Gran Fondo brings over 80 miles and almost 8000 ft of gain, and Spinderella Ride keeps early June lively. Pebble Creek sits just south of Pocatello, and Scout Mountain holds the bigger climbing feel.

Season: Warm-weather months suit both runners and cyclists best. Summer gives long days for Z2, intervals, trail doubles, and big road loops before the heat stacks up. Locals use the Portneuf River Greenway for steady miles, and the foundation has built over 15 miles of river trail with 27 miles planned. Pocatello winters change the rhythm instead of killing it. Runners stay lower around ISU, Ross Park, Shady Side Trail, and AMI/Kirkham Trail when conditions allow. Riders shift toward careful road windows, mountain bikes when trails are ready, and Pebble Creek days when skiing and snowboarding take over.
