Pocatello sits on the Portneuf River in south-central Idaho at 1,370m elevation, surrounded by sagebrush and the Bannock Range — hard terrain for distance running. The Idaho Triple Crown Marathon and Scout Mountain Ultras use these high-desert trails and ridges; cyclists tackle the rolling Spinderella Ride (160km) and 4 Peaks Gran Fondo (129km) events that climb into the nearby mountains for sustained elevation gain. The city itself is flat along the river, but serious runners and cyclists both head immediately uphill into Scout Mountain and beyond for any real training.
