Utah Valley Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

The Utah Valley Marathon weekend is a road-running series in northern Utah, typically held on the first Saturday of June. It features a marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a kids race. The marathon begins in Wallsburg at an elevation of 5,963 feet and concludes on University Avenue and Center Street in downtown Provo, at 4,504 feet above sea level. This USATF-certified course is a Boston Marathon qualifier, and the marathon field is generally limited to 2,000 participants. The event originated with 120 marathon runners and later incorporated shorter races, evolving into a full race weekend. The marathon course crosses Wasatch and Utah Counties, following Highway 222 from Wallsburg. It turns onto U.S. Route 189 near Deer Creek Reservoir, then descends through Provo Canyon alongside the Provo River before reaching Orem and Provo on University Avenue. Hyrum Oaks and Jeremiah West founded the race, which has been a component of the Utah Grand Slam since its initial years. Volunteers contribute significantly to the event's operation, and it benefits charities such as CharityVision, Mentor's International, Mac's Gift, and Road to Success. Notably, members of the Pleasant Grove Fire Department once used the marathon as their yearly fitness assessment, and the race was the first local event to permit footbikes.

Splash Summit Triathlon

The Splash Summit Triathlon, held at Splash Summit Water Park in Provo, Utah, is a reverse-order sprint triathlon that starts in late summer. Racers begin with a 5K run on asphalt, followed by an 8-mile bike ride and a 300-yard swim. The race concludes by heading up the ramp for a finish down the 300-foot Avalanche waterslide. The event is designed for newer triathletes, families, and kids, as well as experienced racers. Lifejackets are permitted during the swim, and participants can register starting at age 7. A team relay is available, along with a 5K walk/run for those who wish to bypass the bike and swim segments. Additionally, there is a 12-and-under super-sprint featuring a 1.5-mile run, a 4-mile bike ride, and a 150-yard swim. Finishers receive a medal, complimentary photos, a T-shirt, and water park passes. Awards are presented to the top overall male and female finishers and to age-group competitors. The event is also included in the Utah County TRIfecta bundle, which comprises other local triathlons.

The Timp Trail Marathon and Half

The Timp Trail Marathon and Half begins at the Timpanogos Park Trailhead in Orem, Utah, situated at the base of Mount Timpanogos. The series includes a full marathon and a half marathon crossing mountain trails and firebreak roads, with both races concluding at Timpanogos Park. The full course covers 26.63 miles, featuring 5,883 feet of elevation gain and reaching a summit of 7,898 feet; standard road marathon pacing is not applicable here. The half marathon spans 13.1 miles with 2,389 feet of gain, ascending to 6,450 feet. The full marathon route extends through Cliff Edge, Dry Canyon, Battle Creek, and Grove Creek, before looping back through several of these areas toward the finish. The half marathon follows the initial section to Cliff Edge and Dry Canyon, then retraces Cliff Edge late in the race. Participants should anticipate a self-sufficient trail experience, with potential for snow, rain, mud, stream crossings, rocky terrain, no mile markers, no portable restrooms, and limited volunteer support. The course is marked with pink and blue flagging. Aid stations are positioned between 1 and 7 miles apart, and full marathon runners may utilize a drop bag at Grove Creek. The course records are notable for this terrain: Aaron Fletcher completed the full marathon in 3:07:40, and Preston Johnson finished the half marathon in 1:35:38.

About cycling & running in Provo

Provo-Orem-Lehi Training Ground

Running: Locals run the Provo River Trail for steady Z2, then point east when intervals need a canyon grade. Gazelle Running Club meets at Riverside Park six days per week, with beginner and advanced times. BYU Running Club keeps Provo honest, and Run Elite Program brings the Springville youth fire. Utah Valley Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K is the anchor event. The Utah Valley Marathon course runs 42 km and gains 1,516 m. Vineyard Days 5K, Provo Freedom 5k, and Runtastic HAUNTED Provo keep the calendar full.

Cycling: Riders call the Murdock Canal Trail the go-to before-work or after-work spin, because the paved trail runs 17 miles from Orem to Lehi. The Murdock Canal Trail connects to the Provo River Trail, the Jordan River Trail, and Valley Vista Mountain Bike Trails in Pleasant Grove. Highway 189 carries riders up Provo Canyon toward Bridal Veil Falls. American Fork Canyon holds the serious climbing, and the Alpine Loop scenic drive tops out at 8,000 feet. The Alpine Loop climb covers 5 miles and gains 2,700 vertical feet. Locals get crit legs on valley flats and gran fondo legs in the canyons.

Season: Fall is the sweet spot, because American Fork Canyon trails are firm and the traffic is light. Summer brings Splash Summit Triathlon at Splash Summit Water Park, with a 5k run on asphalt before the bike, swim, and waterslide finish. Vineyard City Splash Dash also lands in summer, so locals can race short and still stack base miles. Winter changes the feel without killing the habit. Runtastic FRIGID keeps runners sharp, and Vineyard City Blizzard 5K gives November a marker. Cyclists shift toward paved trail miles, canyon windows, and whatever Z2 the weather allows.
