Gloucester's running is dominated by the flat Severn Valley floor, with the riverside paths offering mile after mile of traffic-free cruising; most local runners head west into the Forest of Dean for proper elevation. Cyclists thrive here—the Maisemore U72 25-mile time trial is a standard fixture, and the gently rolling farmland between Gloucester and the Cotswolds provides reliable 40–60km loops. The Cotswold Way challenge, a 160km four-day route, starts just south of the city and climbs to over 600m in the hills beyond.
