Geelong Running Festival

The Geelong Running Festival begins at Eastern Beach in Geelong, Victoria. The main race day features a marathon, half marathon, wheelchair half marathon, and a 6.5km community run. Notably, this marks Geelong's first marathon, following seven years of planning. The festival also offers shorter races for children and all-abilities participants, catering to runners, walkers, families, and those seeking shorter or less formal distances alongside the full 42.2km marathon. The course winds through Geelong's traffic-free streets, passing Kardinia Park and offering views of Corio Bay and the Eastern Beach foreshore. The event welcomes local participants as well as national and international visitors, aiming to showcase the city and its landmarks. Grassrootz serves as the charity partner, with funds supporting local charities. The race program includes a kids mile, an all-abilities mile, and an 800m run for children aged five and under.

Run Forrest Half Marathon Trail Run

Run Forrest is a winter trail-running event based in the small hinterland township of Forrest, Victoria, with the race hub at Barwon Water Reserve on Hennigan Crescent. The main distances are 21 km, 10 km, and 6 km, with a kids race as well, so the day ranges from a half-marathon trail effort to a short beginner-friendly run. The setting is the Otway Ranges, about two hours from Melbourne's CBD, and the event is organised by Southern Exposure. The course runs under the Otway canopy on terrain that shifts between forest trails and riverside paths. Runners deal with undulating hills, native forest sections, flowing rivers, and dense fern gullies, so it is more of a proper trail outing than a flat road-style race. The longer distances are rated moderate to challenging, while the 6 km option gives newer trail runners a way into the event. The race has more than a dozen annual editions behind it, and its winter identity is part of the appeal: the organisers describe Forrest as a winter wonderland and frame the run as a misty, cold-season trail adventure among the ferns and trees.

GCCC - Barwon Valley Park Half Marathon & 5K

The Barwon Valley Park Half Marathon & 5K, an event by the Geelong Cross Country Club, takes place at Barwon Valley Park in Belmont, Victoria. Both the start and finish are located within the park. Scheduled for late winter, the event features two distances: a 21.1 km half marathon and a 5 km race. The format is handicap racing, meaning runners begin at staggered intervals. The half marathon route traces the Barwon River corridor through Barwon Valley Park, incorporating riverside paths, shaded areas, and open parkland. The 5 km race is contained within the same park environs and is suitable for less experienced runners, those increasing their distance, or individuals seeking a flat, fast course. Participation is open to club members, invitational runners, and race-day entrants. The staggered start system provides an opportunity for consistent pacers to contend for the win.

About cycling & running in Geelong

Geelong Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Barwon River first, because the river is superb and the path gives easy Z2 without much fuss. The route runs 32km with 51m gain. Geelong Runners Club keeps it free, fun, and inclusive, and Geelong Cross Country Club brings the proper club-race feel. Kardinia Park anchors the Geelong Running Festival. Run4Geelong keeps the waterfront social. Barwon Heads Running Festival gives the flat coastal hit. John Landy Athletics Field suits intervals when you want no hiding.

Cycling: Locals ride everything from bay spins to proper hurt. Geelong Cycling Club has been around since 1911, and its home sits at the Cycling Regional Pavilion at the Geelong Criterium Circuit site on Barwon Heads Road, Belmont. Belmont Crit Circuit, Eastern Gardens, Waurn Ponds Drive, Paraparap, Moriac General Store, and Deans Marsh Gravel Classic all sit in the race mix. Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race starts at the Geelong waterfront and rolls through Eastern Park, Barwon Heads, and Torquay. Barrabool Hills bring punchy climbs and quick descents. Challambra Crescent reaches 18%. Melville Avenue hits over 20%.

Season: January and September are the big riding months, and they suit base miles on the Bay Trail, Bellarine Rail Trail, and Barwon River trail. February is the hottest month, so locals go early, keep the waterfront honest, and expect mild to warm summer days with westerly winds. Summer riding can feel hard at first on a very windy day, especially heading for the Bellarine Peninsula or Surf Coast. July is the coldest month, and winter shifts running toward steady river loops, sealed Barwon Valley Park courses, and shorter efforts around Eastern Park. Winter riding stays good, but locals choose routes with care.
