Hobart Marathon Festival

The Hobart Marathon Festival takes place on Tasmania's waterfront during autumn, with the Derwent River to one side and kunanyi/Mount Wellington overlooking the city. It is a road-running festival featuring a full marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km run, 5km walk, and 2km fun run and walk. This event accommodates marathoners, club runners, walkers, and families opting for shorter distances. The main course involves two laps of central Hobart, passing Constitution Dock, the Salamanca Wharves, and the riverfront. Participants benefit from quiet streets, cool autumn air, pacers, bag drop services, and nutrition and hydration stations, suitable for both first-time participants and experienced runners seeking a consistent performance. Atlas Events organizes the festival. The race is a full member of AIMS, and its community initiatives include fundraising for Variety and support for the Indigenous Marathon Foundation.

Lincoln Quilliam

The Lincoln Quilliam is part of the Kunanyi Trail Series, held at Tolosa Park in Glenorchy, Tasmania. It offers 21km, 10km, and 5km trail running distances. The primary event is the Tolosa Half, a challenging mountain half marathon. It begins on the outskirts of town, soon entering open woodland before progressing into thicker, mixed forest. The shorter races maintain the trail character, providing varied participation options: the 10km route concludes at Old Hobartians Track, and the 5km “Taster” is suitable for young trail runners, adults seeking a shorter distance, and individuals new to trail running. The Half marathon extends to The Springs near the midpoint, incorporating rocky, technical terrain, handcrafted wooden bridges, and a downhill section on the purpose-built North-South track. The scenery features tall eucalyptus trees and lichen-adorned dolerite rock formations. Organisers note the courses are rocky in sections but mostly smooth. The 5km is described as manageable with a pram, though an all-terrain model with a roll cage is recommended because of the uneven path. An Event Hub is available for families and support crews, offering children’s activities and coffee from Bean and Leaf. AUTRA members are eligible for a discount on race entry.

Run Tasmania Stage Race

The Run Tasmania Stage Race is a four-day trail race held in late November around Hobart, the Tasman Peninsula, and south-east Tasmania. Participants can select the Devil Long Course, approximately 160 km total, or the Quoll Short Course, approximately 80 km total. The long course features daily stages of 15 to 25 km, while the short course covers 10 to 23 km daily. This event is designed for trail runners seeking a supported multi-day race, with Rapid Ascent managing course marking and event logistics. The race changes location daily. It begins on coastal trails near Kingston, proceeds to the alpine terrain of kunanyi / Mount Wellington, and then enters ancient rainforest near Fortescue Bay on the Tasman Peninsula. The final stage concludes at Cape Raoul, with the course crossing terrain above sea cliffs around 300 metres high. The format combines challenging trail days with nights in town and a wilderness stay, offering runners a staged race and an intimate view of Tasmania’s coast, mountains, forests, and cliffs.

About cycling & running in Hobart

Hobart Training Notes

Running: Locals run with the mountain in sight, even from the Domain Athletic Centre and the Waterfront. The Domain works for intervals, tempo, and those ripper summer-day sessions when the backdrop makes the reps feel less ugly. The Pipeline Trail suits Z2 because locals can switch off and go for an hour without doubling back. Hobart Run Club meets Sunday at 9am and Wednesday at 6:30am. Knockoffs Run Club meets Tuesday at 5:30am at the Domain, Thursday at 6pm in North Hobart, and Sunday at 8am on the Pipeline in winter or Kingston Beach in summer. The Pipeline Trail runs 18 km and gains 1,251 m.

Cycling: Hobart riders use the Intercity Cycleway for base miles, and the concrete path runs 14 km from Hobart to Claremont. The Foreshore Trail follows the coast from Geilston Bay to Howrah, so locals get an easy spin without making it a mission. The gran fondo day covers 8 km with 2,581 m of elevation. The brief names no cycling clubs or cycling anchor races, so the anchor efforts here are the big routes. Mount Wellington, Cascade Road, Macquarie Street, and Huon Valley hold the climbs.

Season: You get 3 hours for long runs, late spins, and proper Z2 blocks after work. Locals use December to February for Kingston Beach runs, Clarence Foreshore flats, Seven Mile Beach trails, and longer rides toward Cygnet or Lower Sandy Bay. Hobart summers stay cool, though strong northerly winds can show up and keep the bike honest. Winter keeps the inner suburbs mild, and sunny days still happen by Tasmanian standards. Mount Wellington often wears a snowcap, so locals shift trail runs, singletrack, and cyclocross-minded sessions around the weather.
