The Bello Gallico

The Bello Gallico begins and ends at the Roosenberg in Oud-Heverlee, with routes extending into the National Park Brabantse Wouden. This is a trail and walking event focused on long distances: runners select 100 km or 200 km, while walkers choose 80 km or 160 km. The event operates unsupported, meaning participants depend on official aid stations, volunteers, and other participants instead of external support crews. The routes traverse unpaved paths and forest tracks, marked by reflective yellow arrows. The 100 km run and 80 km walk each consist of one loop through the national park. The longer distances involve repeating the base loop in reverse: two 100 km loops for the 200 km run and two 80 km loops for the 160 km walk. Aid stations are positioned approximately every 20 km, offering drinks and snacks, with a meal provided midway for the longest distances. A GPS tracker, required equipment including a survival bag, headlamp, and waterproof clothing, along with a post-race barbecue, contribute to its character as a practical, self-reliant ultra event, distinct from a road race with constant assistance.

Flanders Triathlon Sports

Flanders Triathlon Sports is a multi-disciplinary race event in Haacht, Belgium, scheduled for a Friday in July. It is built around triathlon formats, but it also offers paved running and endurance options, with distances listed from 5 km and 10 km up to a half marathon, 24 km, 84.2 km, and 300 km. Participants can choose 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 triathlon formats, plus a double triathlon equal to two Ironman-distance races. The event also includes a 24-hour race and two children’s categories, Mini-kort and Mini-lang, so the same programme covers kids, standard-distance triathletes, long-distance runners, and extreme endurance athletes.

Trail For Nature

Trail For Nature is a November trail run in Winksele, offering distances of 7.5 km, 15 km, and 22 km. This event supports local nature conservation, with routes winding through an autumn landscape instead of a road-race course. The 7.5 km race includes a 125-meter climb, the 15 km has a 255-meter climb, and the 22 km features a 350-meter climb, ensuring even the shortest distance presents a challenge. All distances are timed. Refreshments are available on the longer routes and at the finish line, with soup provided post-run. A free 1.2 km Kids Trail is available for children up to 12, including timing, refreshments, and a medal. Parents can accompany their children, and it is advised that children under 8 are accompanied.

About cycling & running in Louvain

Leuven Training Notes

Running: Locals run Leuven from the centre to the green edges, depending on the day. The Vaart gives you a flat, fast run to Wijgmaal brug and back for about 10 km, with lights and water beside you. Heverlee Woods and Meerdaal Forest handle the Z2 days, muddy trails, and longer base miles. The 7 km Leg burner route sets your legs on fire when you want a sharper city hit. Rise Runners bring the social vibe and plan runs on Strava. DCLA gives you structured work on Diestesteenweg. Leuven Marathon, Leuven Half Marathon, Leuven 10 KM, VK Heuvel-Loop, and Meerdaalwoud Trail anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride Leuven because the city centre is compact, calm, and full of bikes. The easy spin into the green is 6 km. The hard loop is 7 km and 1314 altitude meters from Zoet Water Oud-Heverlee when fitness is good. The 80 km loop starts at Parking Phillipssite and climbs 580 altitude meters around arrival city Leuven. The hills sit toward Tervuren and Huldenberg, with Hageland rolling east and vines on southern slopes. The Earls of Leuven sit in the local club scene. Grote Prijs Jef Scherens and Cyclocross Leuven are the anchor race names.

Season: Spring and autumn suit Leuven best, with pleasant running and riding temperatures and proper forest colour. Summer gives long daylight for extended Z2 rides, late runs, and extra loops through Heverlee Woods, Meerdaal Forest, Park Abbey, and the Vaart. Locals use the warm months for longer gravel, brewery routes, and relaxed base miles after work. Winter shortens the day, so runners lean on the Vaart and KU Leuven Campus in Heverlee for streetlights. Cyclists keep it practical with compact city riding, gravel when the surface plays nice, and Cyclocross Leuven in January for the season’s sharper edge.
