Urban Trail Gent is a non-competitive city run in Gent, Belgium, and part of the BRITA Urban Trail Series. Current listings indicate an October edition, with runners starting in waves rather than all at once. The concept is straightforward: you run through the city, but the route is designed around locations a typical road race would avoid. The Gent course guides runners through historic alleys, waterfront quays, cobblestones, staircases, courtyards, landmark buildings, and sections usually closed to the public. The series offers 7 km or 13 km options based on the city, and participation is limited to prevent the route from feeling like a large road-race crowd. It is suitable for beginners, club runners, and those primarily seeking a quick tour inside Gent, with volunteers, music, and small surprises during the event.
One of Ghent's recurring annual races.
Running: Locals run Ghent flat, steady, and close to water. You can run a 4 km flat loop on grass or dirt trails. Watersportbaan gives you a 5 km Finse Piste when the legs want soft Z2. Blaarmeersen gives you another 5 km flat dirt option. Drongen gives you 10 km with dirt trails and asphalt. Gentbrugge gives you 17 km on mostly flat sidewalks with some dirt roads. Parkbos gives you 10 km of mostly dirt roads. Gent Running Team trains three times a week at 7:30 PM. KAA Gent and KRC Gent keep the athletics side honest. Ghent Marathon, Urban Trail Gent, and Bashir's Summer Run are the anchor races.
Cycling: Locals ride because the scale is tilted toward cyclists and pedestrians. Ghent sits inside the East Flanders cycle node network, so base miles are easy to stack without overthinking the route. The network covers 1 km with 96% paved riding. The Scheldt Route from Doornik to Antwerpen passes through Ghent for longer days. The Art Cities Route from Oostende to Brussel and the Flanders Route also pass through or start here. Omloop Het Nieuwsblad kicks off in Ghent, and Six Days of Ghent keeps the track crowd sharp. Gent-Wevelgem and Flèche de Wallonie - Gent sit on the calendar. The climbs live outside the flat city on Old Kwaremont, Koppenberg, and Paterberg.
Season: Spring is the best stretch because the Classics run from the end of February until mid-April, and Ghent Marathon lands in March. Belgium in spring can bring four seasons in a single day: rain, sunshine, gusts of wind, and a sudden temperature drop. Summer gives runners Bashir's Summer Run in June and Triathlon Gent in August, with the Leie, Topsporthal, and Blaarmeersen in the mix. Ghent works well for Z2 rides and intervals on flat ground when the weather is good. Winter shifts cyclists toward Six Days of Ghent and runners toward darker steady miles before STYREKX Fitness Race Gent in March.
