Brussels Ekiden

The Brussels Ekiden is a 42-kilometer relay race held in Bruxelles each October. Rather than a single runner completing the entire distance, a team divides the race into segments, with runners taking turns. This format resembles a shared marathon more than an individual road race, drawing from the Japanese long-distance relay tradition of ekiden, which is centered on stage-to-stage running. The exchange of a cloth sash, known as a tasuki, between successive runners defines the ekiden. This practice originates from Japan's historical courier system, where messages were transported between stations. The modern racing adaptation traces its roots to an extended multi-day run between Kyoto and Tokyo. In Japan, ekiden is strongly associated with school, university, prefectural, and corporate teams, and the Brussels event reflects this team-racing culture over the typical mass-start marathon atmosphere.

Urban Trail Brussels

Urban Trail Brussels begins and ends on Beursplein, offering runners a choice of 7 km or 12 km through the Belgian capital. Without timing or race rankings, the focus is on exploring the city at a running pace. Starts are divided into five waves, approximately twenty minutes apart, and a sand-loper start system ensures the field progresses through narrower sections. The 12 km route includes two course information points with refreshments, and the 7 km route has one refreshment point. Participants collect their race number and event T-shirt on the day using an e-ticket; early pickup increases the likelihood of securing the requested shirt size. The package also includes a Melkunie Protein quark. BRITA-filtered water is provided at the start and finish, with Powerade available at the finish. Free sports-bag storage utilizes a sticker system, with bags returned upon presentation of a matching sticker and runner number on the arm or hand.

Trail de Bruxelles

Trail de Bruxelles is a forest trail race held in the Zoniënwoud, near Brussels, beginning at the Oudergem sports center. It takes place in October and features four marked distances: 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, and 25 km. This event emphasizes trail running over road racing, with over 90% of the terrain unpaved and each route forming a single loop through the forest. The shortest distance includes 178 m of elevation gain and a two-hour time limit, while the 25 km route has 374 m of climbing, two aid stations, and a 3 hour 45 minute limit. The courses are marked with clear signs displaying black arrows, and marshals are stationed at intersections and hazardous sections. Runners operate in semi-autonomy, carrying their own supplies between aid stations, which offer water, energy drink, and snacks. The race eschews disposable plastic cups, requiring participants to use their own cup or bottle, or an eco-cup. Recent events have attracted approximately 1,500 participants. The organization is functional: bibs are distributed on race day, showers and changing rooms are provided, bag storage is organized by race number, parking near the sports center is restricted, and dogs are permitted on the course but not within the sports center itself.

About cycling & running in Anderlecht

Anderlecht Training Notes

Running: Locals run Anderlecht from Astrid Park, Scherdemael Park, Peterbos Park, Joseph Lemaire Park, Jean Vives Park, Vogelzang, and the greener upper side near Neerpede. The 5km Anderlecht starts in Astrid Park, the park around the RSC Anderlecht stadium, and the course brings a lot of running on dirt roads. The 12km Anderlecht is the anchor event here, with city roads and local paths past the athletics track, Lotto Park, Neerpede, and the Hall of Fame. Brussels Runners keep the bigger Brussels rhythm going year-round, several times a week, usually ten kilometers at a pace where full sentences still work.

Cycling: Locals ride Anderlecht when they want steady base miles without making a fuss about it. Aurore Cyclo de Saint-Gilles gives road cyclists a proper club option from Route de Lennik, 1015, 1070 Anderlecht. The route runs 8 km to Rue du Culot in Gembloux, with 551 meters of elevation gain over medium-difficulty terrain. JustGo lists 8 different loop cycling routes in Anderlecht, with rides from 30 minutes to 4 hours that start and finish at the same point. The climbs sit on that Gembloux gravel pull, so locals use it when flat Z2 needs a bite.

Season: June, September, and October give Anderlecht the best training months, especially when the legs want consistent intervals, longer rides, or a clean 12km build. Summer brings warm days, but the region still sees around 130 rainy days per year, and storms turn dirt paths into puddles and muddy spots. Winter gives Brussels its oceanic Cfb feel, with cool air and marine weather coming in from the Atlantic. Locals keep running and riding anyway, but the slightly soggy grass, mixed terrain, and muddy corners change the grip for both shoes and tyres.
