Liege-Bastogne-Liege

Liège-Bastogne-Liège is a one-day road race held in Belgium’s Ardennes in late April, traveling from Liège south to Bastogne and returning. Cyclists refer to it as La Doyenne, or "The Old Lady," as it is the oldest of the five Monuments in men’s professional cycling. It typically concludes the spring classics season and also finishes the Ardennes Classics series, which includes the Amstel Gold Race and La Flèche Wallonne. The men's event is part of the UCI World Tour, and the Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes, held on the same day, is part of the UCI Women's World Tour. The route typically spans around 250 kilometers, featuring numerous short, steep climbs instead of a single mountain pass. This course profile favors climbers, punchers, and grand-tour contenders capable of responding to repeated attacks after extended racing. The race has consistently taken place in Belgium’s southern, French-speaking region and originated as an event supported by L’Express newspaper. Eddy Merckx holds the men's record with five victories, followed by Moreno Argentin and Alejandro Valverde with four wins each. In the women's race, Demi Vollering leads the roll of honor with three victories.

Trail La Fontinoise

Trail La Fontinoise is a trail race in Fontin, a village in the Ardennes region of Belgium near Esneux in Liège province. Runners choose from four distances: 9 km, 17 km, 24 km, or 35 km. Even the shortest route includes 200 meters of climbing, while the longest packs in 1100 meters, indicating this is a hilly off-road event rather than a flat road run. The distance options make it suitable for newer trail runners, regular club runners, and people looking for a longer Ardennes effort. The 17 km route has 420 meters of elevation gain, the 24 km has 750 meters, and each course is capped at 200 participants. Entry fees are low compared with many trail races, with online payment by card or Bancontact and on-site registration possible for a small extra charge if places are still available.

About cycling & running in Liège

Liège Training Notes

Running: Locals keep easy runs in Parc de la Boverie, Parc Saint-Léonard, and the tight streets around the centre. Parc de la Boverie gives you a clean loop feel when you want Z2 without thinking too much. La Corrida des Remparts uses city streets around Parc Saint-Léonard, Place des déportés, and Rue des Glacis, so runners know those corners well. Les Baroudeurs Liégeois bring the trail mood, with Sarti-Trail, Trail Liège Métropole, Trail d'Esneux, and Trail La Fontinoise close in the calendar. Les 24H jogging de Liège, Batirun Liège, the Semi-Marathon de la Province de Liège, and Beer Lovers' Marathon are the anchor checks.

Cycling: Locals ride from the Meuse valley and choose the day from there. The Meuse gives you a relaxed outing, and the Ardennes give you the bigger effort. The loop is 5 km from Liège to Liège. La Redoute sits on the route, and the gradients don't lie as they slowly rise to 14%. The Ourthe Valley Loop and Liège-Esneux-Liège pull riders south, while NL09 - Liège to Maastricht points north. Lüttich - Momignies runs 169 km and climbs 1,398 m, so it works for a hard gran fondo day.

Season: July and August are the best months, and most people ride then. Summer stays moderated by maritime air, so base miles feel steady rather than cooked. Locals use the warm stretch for long Z2, Ardennes climbs, and race legs before Liège-Bastogne-Liège stories come back into every cafe ride. Winter stays mild for this latitude and inland position, so runners still keep Parc de la Boverie and Parc Saint-Léonard in the rotation. The colder months shift the mood toward intervals, cyclocross grit, shorter loops, and trail days where the Ourthe and Ardennes feel more honest than fast.
