Antwerp Marathon

The Antwerp Marathon begins on the Left River Bank of Antwerp, sending runners through the Waaslandtunnel under the Scheldt before finishing on the Grote Markt. This AIMS-certified road marathon in Antwerp, Belgium, covers the standard 42.195 km distance. Organized since 1980, the race has taken place in April since 2007. The event also features shorter one km and five km runs, and the Antwerp 10 Miles, which follows the marathon and attracts significantly more participants than the full marathon. The course starts with an 8 km loop on Linkeroever before crossing under the river toward the north side of the city. It then passes the antique area, the old law court, the Binnensingel, Rivierenhof park, Antwerp International Airport, and the Scheldt before concluding in the historic central square. The marathon has had interruptions in its history, with periods when it was not held, but it was reintroduced as part of a larger running event. The 10 Miles can significantly outnumber the marathon field; one edition saw over 25,000 runners in the 10-mile race compared to under 2,000 in the marathon.

Antwerp Backyard Ultra

At Antwerp Backyard Ultra, runners assemble in the municipal park of Schelle, near Antwerp, for a June ultra. The rule is simple yet unforgiving: every hour, all participants begin another 6.706 km loop. Each runner must finish the loop within the hour and then re-enter the line for the next hour's start. The race continues day and night until only one person can complete a full loop. Success depends less on speed and more on pacing, recovery, and the mental fortitude to continue as the routine becomes taxing. The loop begins and ends at Hamerstraat 1 in Schelle, crossing a flat but diverse park route indicated by arrows. The field is limited to 100 runners, all 18 years or older, with each participant allowed to register a support person. The facilities include catering, medical assistance, showers, a visible timer in the start area, and social media updates as the number of runners decreases. Headlamps are mandatory from sunset to sunrise. The victor receives a Silver Ticket for the World Team Championship.

About cycling & running in Antwerp

Antwerp Training Notes

Running: Rivierenhof gives locals easy green laps, and the 130-hectare park keeps base miles simple. Nachtegalen Park adds 90 hectares with Den Brandt, Vogelenzang, and Middelheim Park nearby for longer Z2. Founders Running Club meets weekly at Bar Stark on Saturdays at 9:45 AM CEST, and runners choose a pace or follow a pacer. The Antwerp Marathon gives the city its anchor event, and the course covers 42.195km. WALLS Linker Oevert Half Marathon, Urban Trail Antwerpen, Rivierenhofloop, Reuzenloop, and Antwerp Backyard Ultra keep the calendar busy.

Cycling: Antwerp is a real cycling city, and locals use hundreds of kilometres of safe, comfortable cycle paths for commuting, intervals, and easy spins. Cycle streets show up pink on digital maps, and riders get priority while motor traffic stays at 30 km/hour. Cycle highways show up red, so longer base miles feel natural. Velo club ‘t zuid has A, B, and C tiers, and even the C group rides at least 60km with some stretches up to 40km/h. Antwerp Campine gives gravel riders 10 routes in the Antwerpse Kempen. The climbs are not really the Antwerp story, so locals chase pace, wind, crit legs, and gran fondo fitness instead.

Season: Summer gives Antwerp warm riding and running days, and locals use the lighter evenings for Z2, intervals, and coffee after the run. The river Scheldt keeps the city feeling open, and Linkeroever works well when you want a flatter half-marathon rhythm. Belgian winter stays rainy, not snowy, and riders usually keep going with the right clothing. Winter averages around +6 degrees Celsius with drizzle, and locals watch for early-morning ice. Roads are too slippery to bike about 2 days a year, and snow usually lands for a week or two at most.
