The Pinehurst Triathlon Festival begins and ends at Pinehurst Marina in the North Carolina sandhills, with Lake Pinehurst central to the day. This spring triathlon is Round 2 of the North Carolina Triathlon Series, offering both International and Sprint Distance races. Athletes may compete as individuals, form two- or three-person relay teams, or select the aquabike format for the swim and bike segments only. The available race options are open to participants aged 13 and older. The bike course utilizes quiet local roads with minimal traffic, and the run course circles Lake Pinehurst. The location contributes a distinct Pinehurst character: the marina, the lake, the sandhills, adjacent golf courses, and the Village of Pinehurst’s shops and restaurants are all situated near the event. The race has been a fixture in the North Carolina Triathlon Series since 1997, attracting the typical blend of series regulars, local triathletes, relay teams, and participants opting for the sprint or aquabike distances to suit their schedules.
The NC Open Water Championships, held in late May at Lake Echo in Seven Lakes, North Carolina, is an open-water swim meet. Races begin from 114 Edgewater Drive in West End. The event features four distances: a 400-meter Splash and Dash, an 800-meter swim, a 2K, and a 3K. Participants must be registered with U.S. Masters Swimming. Masters entrants compete on the same schedule as USA Swimming athletes but in separate waves, with Masters swimmers starting in the final wave for each event. All races commence in the water and conclude on land, incorporating left-hand buoy turns. The 400-meter course is a direct path along the dam. The 800-meter race follows a small triangle layout parallel to the dam. The 2K and 3K courses are constructed using a 1K counterclockwise triangle, with turns made over the left shoulder. Swimmers may enter multiple distances at a reduced rate for additional events. Timing chips are distributed at the race venue. Saturday participants receive a T-shirt and a chicken sandwich per individual, not per event.
Running: Locals run Pinehurst-Southern Pines on sandy soil, greenways, and park loops. The Pinehurst Greenway gives runners a pretty flat 5-mile out-and-back on Linden Road when Z2 is the job. Southern Pines Reservoir Park has a 2-mile loop around a 95-acre lake, so it works for easy miles before intervals. Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve covers 900 acres with pine forest feel underfoot. The loop hits 58 km and gains +114 m when locals want longer rolling work. Sandhills Running keeps the scene visible. Sandhills Flyers 5K, Pinehurst Turkey Trot, Viking Dash, and the Sasquatch races give the calendar its anchor event feel.
Cycling: Rainbow Cycles says the Sandhills Area is a great place to ride a bike, and locals mostly agree after a few base miles here. Southern Pines Greenway Trail keeps rides mellow when the legs need recovery. Governor's Creek MTB Trail gives off-road riders a local singletrack option. Governor's Creek MTB Trail runs 9 mi from Camp Easter Road to McDeeds Creek Road. Horse farm neighborhood roads bring gravel and rollers. The climbs are in the rolling hills, with some descents and climbs but nothing like mountain grades. Pinehurst Triathlon Festival gives cyclists the anchor race name.
Season: Locals train year-round, but the sweet spot is when sandy ground stays firm and the greenways feel easy to stack. Summer puts Reservoir Park, Weymouth Woods, and Martin Dog Park into the rotation because shade, water, and short loops matter. Reservoir Park has that 95-acre lake and a 2-mile loop, so runners can keep things controlled and riders can spin without turning the day into a gran fondo. Winter changes the rhythm more than the terrain. The Pinehurst Greenway stays useful because it is pretty flat and totals 5 miles. Deer show up early, Pinehurst still was not built on a grid, and locals keep routes simple when daylight gets tight.
