Rock the Light Trail Run
SAT OCT 17
Zombie Run
SAT OCT 31
The Zombie Run is a Halloween 5K in Traverse City, hosted by Right Brain Brewery. Participants are encouraged to wear zombie costumes, making the field less about a standard road-race look and more about fake blood, undead outfits, and people enjoying the theme. Following the run, attendees remain for a medal ceremony, costume prizes, music, post-race refreshments, and zombie socializing. All proceeds benefit TART Trails, the local trail organization, giving the event a practical community purpose beyond the Halloween atmosphere.
Turkey Vulture Trot 5k & 1-Mile Fun Run
THU NOV 26
The Turkey Vulture Trot is a Thanksgiving running event held at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville, Michigan, beginning at 12500 Crystal Mountain Drive. Participants can choose between a 5K race covering 5 kilometers or a 1-Mile Fun Run, approximately 1.6 kilometers. The event attracts participants primarily from Michigan, with some traveling from states including Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, New York, Oregon, and Texas. Approximately 237 individuals participated, with about 162 in the 5K and around 75 in the fun run. Proceeds benefit the North Sky Raptor Sanctuary in Grand Traverse County, directly linking the bird-themed race name to its supported cause.
TCTC Jingle Bell Run
SUN DEC 20
The TCTC Jingle Bell Run is a nighttime holiday 5K run and walk in Traverse City, Michigan. It starts and finishes at the Park Place Hotel, with participants heading out after dark in December for a relaxed, non-timed route. The event is for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, and current Traverse City Track Club members can enter for free. The course uses neighborhood streets beside downtown Traverse City, where homes and blocks are lit up with holiday decorations. More than 600 people usually join, many wearing costumes, holiday outfits, and lights, with costume prizes adding to the low-pressure feel. After the run, people gather for complimentary cookies and hot cocoa, and each participant receives a custom Jingle Bell Run ornament.

About 5K races in Traverse City

Traverse City Training Notes

Traverse City hosts 22 5K races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

Locals run the Boardman Lake Trail when they want a clean 4-mile loop with minimal street crossings. The main loop is 4 miles, and side trails can stretch the day up to four miles. The Boardman River Trail supports out-and-backs up to 10 miles and beyond when Z2 needs dirt and shade. East Shore Running Club meets Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for about six miles, with coffee after some runs. Traverse City Track Club keeps the calendar full. Bayshore Marathon and Traverse City Trail Running Festival are the anchor events.

Cherry Capital Cycling Club riders know the Old Mission Peninsula Loop as a club favorite with water views of both East and West Bays. Old Mission Peninsula carries the climbs, the orchard rollers, and the base miles that make this place feel coastal but punchy. The climbs hit 523 m over 2 km. The climbs rack up 700 m of elevation over 4 km. VASA Pathway brings singletrack, and the Blood route keeps gravel folks honest. Tour de TART is the easy anchor ride.

Traverse City feels best in warm, mild summer, when locals stack intervals, long rides, and Wednesday evening Traverse City Track Club Summer Series races. The National Cherry Festival brings the city a busy July feel, and Old Mission Peninsula makes summer rides about cherries, vineyards, water views, and the Old Mission General Store ice cream stop. Winter changes the whole rhythm. Lake-effect snow drives much of the annual total, which averages around 80 inches or 203 cm, and snowfall periods typically last from November to April, so runners accept icy roads and cyclists shift toward Vasa Winter Loop plus Yeti's Revenge.
