Crazy Desert Trail Race

The Crazy Desert Trail Race takes place at San Angelo State Park in San Angelo, Texas, offering distances from 5K to 100K. The available distances include 5K, 10K, half marathon, 25K, marathon, 50K, and 100K, accommodating both casual trail runners and ultrarunners during the same race weekend. The event features fast desert trails with a 24-hour time limit for the 100K distance. This race is organized by the San Angelo Road Lizards, a nonprofit running club run by volunteers who also host free and low-cost races and group runs in the region. The course guides participants through cactus fields, rocky hills, and along a creek within a West Texas park that is also home to Permian-era dinosaur tracks and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Longhorn herd. Aid stations are positioned every 4 to 5 miles and offer comfort foods such as chips, grilled cheese, Skittles, pie, Chick-fil-A, and pizza, served by volunteers. A significant draw of the race is its affordability; the organizers state it is among the least expensive ultramarathons in the United States, with sponsor contributions directly reducing registration costs. Road Lizards events can attract up to 500 registered runners, giving Crazy Desert a local, club-run atmosphere without feeling small.

Shannon Trail Series

The Shannon Trail Series comprises three trail races near San Angelo, Texas, each featuring a short and a long distance option. Race 1 is a 5K or 10K at Middle Concho Park. Race 2 is a 5K or 12K at Twin Buttes Reservoir. Race 3 is a 5K or 15K at San Angelo State Park. Both runners and walkers are welcome; there is no virtual participation, and pets are not permitted on the courses. The series offers incentives for participants completing all three events. Scoring is determined by cumulative gun time across the series. To be eligible for series awards, participants must select and complete the same short or long distance category for all three races. Medals are awarded to finishers on race day at each event. Overall and age-group awards will be presented following the third race. Age groups range from 0-9 to 90-99, with an additional 100+ category.

サンアンジェロ練習あれこれ

ランニング： サンアンジェロらしさを感じながら、軽く走りたいなって時は、みんなConcho River trailを走るんだ。このトレイルは14th Streetと川が交差するあたりから始まって、高校の横を通り、ゴルフコースを過ぎてダウンタウンまで続いてる。トレイルから外れずに往復すれば、だいたい10 milesくらい走れるよ。San Angelo State Parkには50 miles以上のルートがあって、Roadrunner Trailは固い赤土とたまに岩っぽいところがある5kのループコース。San Angelo Road Lizardsは週に何度か無料のグループランをやってて、みんなで楽しく走ってるよ。メインイベントはRun in the Sunだね。

サイクリング： 自転車乗りには、ロード、gravel、家族でゆるポタ、マウンテンバイクと、シンプルなウェストテキサスミックスって感じかな。San Angelo State Parkには、低い灌木やウチワサボテンの間を縫うようなsingletrackもあるよ。Irion CountyのMertzonを通るルートもあって、そのMertzonルートは79 kmで獲得標高65 m。あとは53 kmのルートもあるね。サイクリングクラブとか、メインのレースの名前はここでは特に触れてないけどね。

シーズン： 春と秋は、半乾燥気候のおかげで、Z2とかインターバル、ロングライドなんかの練習には一番いい時期だと感じるな。本格的に暑くなる前にしっかり追い込めるからね。夏になると、もう全然リズムが変わっちゃうんだ。2011年には、San Angeloで100 degrees以上の日が100日も記録されたくらいだから、地元の人たちは朝早く出発して、水をたくさん持ち、日陰をギアみたいに大事にするよ。San Angelo Road Lizardsの金曜の川沿い5Ksや土曜のロングランも、もちろん夏でもやってるけど、とにかく時間との勝負って感じだね。冬は朝がキンと冷え込む日が多くて、平均すると年間60.3日は氷点下になるんだ。ランナーもサイクリストも続けてるけど、年に数回は雪やみぞれが降ることもあるよ。
