Bremen Marathon

The swb-Marathon Bremen is a 42.195-kilometer road marathon held in Bremen, northwest Germany, typically in late September or early October. It also serves as the championship for Lower Saxony and Bremen in the marathon distance, attracting runners competing for regional titles alongside general marathon participants. The race originated in the early 1980s, ceased in the early 1990s, and resumed in the mid-2000s with a modified course. The event includes more than just the marathon: a 10 km race, a half marathon, and a children's run are also offered. Bremen hosted significant marathon events prior to this one, including a German championship post-war and a large North German public run with over 3,800 participants in the 1960s. Heinz Spies of Post SV was instrumental in establishing the Bremen Marathon and its subsequent direction; its initial organization took over two years and cost 150,000 D-Mark. Approximately 2,800 runners participated in that first race, including local officials, though organizers had initially required many more registrations to achieve financial break-even. The men's course record is 2:12:38, set by Kjell-Erik Ståhl, and Petra Liebertz holds the women's record at 2:38:39. Oliver Sebrantke is a notable figure associated with the modern race, having achieved multiple victories across various editions.

About cycling & running in Bremen

Bremen Base Miles

Running: Locals run Bremen from the Weser first. The fields north of the city, the Bürgerpark, and the trails along the Weser are the easy picks for base miles, Z2, and steady long runs. The city centre gives you the Bremer Nachtlauf in May, with 5k and 10k racing through town. ATS-Buntentor gives runners a club hook, and Bremen Marathon in September is the clean anchor event. Bremer Brückenlauf, Halloween-Run-Bremen, Katzen Sprung's Backyard Ultra, Crow Mountain Survival, and Bremer Firmenlauf zur Spätschicht fill the calendar without making training feel fussy.

Cycling: Locals ride because Bremen makes bikes feel normal. The many cycle paths and the almost complete absence of hills keep family spins, gravel loop routes, and gran fondo prep simple. JustGo gives Bremen riders 8 gravel loop routes, and the routes run from 30 minutes to 4 hours with GPX files. The RTF/CTF Bremer Schlüssel in September and the Bremer Roland Radmarathon give the season its anchor race feel. Bremer Roland Radmarathon caps participation at 100 riders, so it has that proper local edge. The climbs are basically nowhere, so locals make power with wind, pace lines, and intervals.

Season: May starts the good stretch with Bremer Nachtlauf, and June, July, and September keep both runners and riders busy. Bremen summer can bring heat waves when continental air arrives, so locals go early, sit in Z2, and save sharp work for cooler slots. October changes the mood because German Cross-Country season starts, Halloween-Run-Bremen lands, and Kuhcross Reloaded follows in November. Winter can bring prolonged frost, and temperatures below -10 °C happen only once every couple of years. Locals keep it simple when it bites: thermobibs on and off you go.
