Kassel Marathon

The Kassel Marathon is a road running event held in Kassel, central Germany. It includes a full marathon, half marathon, relay, walking events, handbike participation, and shorter races for children. The main marathon course consists of two laps, while the half marathon, mini-marathon, and company run utilize distinct marked routes. The event attracts a substantial local audience alongside competitive runners, with participation figures in the tens of thousands and spectator numbers significantly exceeding the number of participants. The course guides runners through Kassel and alongside the Fulda River, passing by city landmarks instead of crossing a rural landscape. The event's scope extends beyond the marathon itself, featuring a Power Walking Half Marathon, mini and mini-half races for younger participants, a Bambinilauf for toddlers, a Marathon Expo, a 21k Party, and a marathon prayer service. This contemporary city race has roots in the older Sensenstein Marathon, which originated at the Sensenstein youth hostel and subsequently adopted a challenging 13.5 km out-and-back course through the Kaufunger Wald, with extensive gravel paths.

43. Wehlheider Volkslauf

The Wehlheiden Volkslauf begins and ends at the Wilhelm-Buchenau-Kampfbahn in Kassel-Wehlheiden. The stadium serves as the central point for a local race day featuring children’s races, walking events, and longer road or park runs. The stadium hosts the shortest events, 400 m and 1000 m races. The main distances offered are 5 km, 10 km, and 17.6 km. TG Wehlheiden is the organizing body, and the event is included in the Nordhessencup series. The longer races commence with one lap inside the stadium before proceeding into Park Schönfeld. The 5 km course circles the park once. The 10 km and 17.6 km courses circle the park twice. The 17.6 km race includes an additional loop after 1.6 km, diverting toward the Bahndamm before rejoining the main course. Marshals will be present at challenging sections to provide direction and encouragement. Registration is exclusively online; no on-site registration will be available.

The event begins with 200 m and 400 m races for very young children, followed by 1 km age-group runs for U8 to U16, including primary-school team races. The evening concludes with 5 km, 10 km, and 18.4 km races. The venue is accessible by car, with parking assistance provided on-site and additional options near Hellweg and Gehrenweg. Course maps are available for the 1 km, 5 km, 10 km, and 18.4 km races, allowing participants to choose from short school-age runs to longer evening distances. Food and drinks will be available, and the event is organized by FTSV-Heckershausen.

About cycling & running in Kassel

Kassel Miles And Climbs

Running: Locals run Kassel through parks, river edges, and the hard little ramps everyone calls the Kasseler Berge. Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe gives you Herkules legs without leaving town. Karlsaue keeps the easy Z2 days smooth near Südstadt and the Auestadion. Waldauer Wiesen works for flatter laps when intervals need less drama. LSG-Waldauer-Wiesen and Laufgemeinschaft Vellmar keep the club scene visible. Kassel Marathon is the big anchor event, with War das eine Stimmung energy when the streets fill up. Kasseler Frauenlauf, LSG-Waldauer-Wiesen-Lauf, REHAmed Herkules-Berglauf, Wehlheider Volkslauf, and Ahnepark-Lauf fill the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride out of Kassel for base miles, gravel forest tracks, and the legendary Kassler Berge. The Kassel Loop gives a proper gran fondo feel, and the route runs 330 km in six stages through forests, river valleys, and the Fulda Valley. One stage runs 21 km to Hessisch Lichtenau. The return leg covers 54 km back toward Kassel. Zweirad-Gemeinschaft Kassel owns the local race vibe. Wednesday evenings mean Rohloff-Cup time, and Herkules is where the climbing legs get checked.

Season: April to September is the good block, when Kassel feels built for running, riding, crit legs, and long Z2 days. The Rohloff-Cup runs from April 8 to August 19, 2026, so summer has a proper midweek rhythm. Ahnataler Abendvolkslauf lands on May 22, Wehlheider Volkslauf lands on June 7, Heiligenröder Abendlauf lands on June 12, and Firmenlauf-Nordhessen lands on June 25. Winter changes the tone for both sports. The Winterlaufserie keeps runners honest on November 1 and December 6, 2026, while cyclists keep base miles tighter around the Fulda River and the parks.
