Magdeburg Marathon

The Magdeburg Marathon begins and ends at Messe Magdeburg, the city’s exhibition grounds, and takes place in the latter half of October. It offers more than just the full marathon: runners can select the half marathon, 10 km, 4.2 km, a 400 m children’s run, and in some editions a marathon relay. VLG 1991 Magdeburg has organized it since its inception, and the field has grown to over 6,000 registered runners, including walking events. This makes it the largest running event in Saxony-Anhalt, resembling a regional running festival more than a single-distance race. The current marathon follows a two-lap city course, while the half marathon completes the same loop once. Starting from the Messe, it crosses the Elbe, passes through Alte Neustadt, goes by the Science Port, follows the Elbe riverbank toward Klosterbergegarten, then proceeds into the city center, past the cathedral, through Rotehorn Park, over Werder, and returns to the Messe. Previous route versions extended farther along the Elbe cycle path toward the Magdeburg Waterway Crossing and also included landmarks like the Otto von Guericke monument, city hall, the Magdeburg Rider, the Hundertwasser House, Elbauenpark, and the Millennium Tower. The race records stand at 2:31:10 for men and 2:57:05 for women, with repeat winners including Robert Linz, Yves Löbel, Nadja Koch, and Sigrid Hoffmann.

About cycling & running in Magdeburg

Magdeburg Base Miles

Running: Locals run the Elbe edges, Rotehornpark, Stadtpark Rotehorn, Elbauenpark, Herrenkrugpark, and the Schroteanlage when they want steady Z2 without much drama. Rotehornpark sits surrounded by the mighty Elbe River and feels like the easy choice for base miles. APEX Running Club meets at @square.with.love on Hasselbachplatz on Wednesdays from 7-8 AM and Sundays from 10-11 AM, usually running 5-7 km at 6:30 min/km. Social Run Magdeburg keeps weekly runs between 5 and 10 km from the Sternendenkmal at Sternbrücke. The anchor race list runs deep, with Magdeburg Marathon, Elbe-Brücken-Lauf Magdeburg, Stadtteillauf im Kannenstieg, Stadtfelder Schrotelauf, Sudenburg-Lauf, and Magdeburger Silvesterlauf.

Cycling: Locals ride the Elbe side, green city links, and the road out toward Halle when they want longer work. The 1-Tages-Tour über 100 KM connects Magdeburg and Halle an der Saale over 100 km, with the finish on Domplatz in Magdeburg and a refreshment stop in Bernburg. Magdeburger Velozipeden Club e.V. brings the old-club feel, first founded in 1869 and revived in 2021, with an open workshop for riders who want to wrench. JustGo gravel loops give locals 30-minute to 4-hour options from one start-finish point. The climbs stay low-key because the brief gives no named hills, so intervals come from wind, bridges, fast bends, and long Z2 pulls.

Season: Spring and summer give Magdeburg the best training months, especially when runners and riders want volume without winter layers. Summer brings warm, relatively wet days, and the city gets 48.9 days a year above 25°C with 12 days above 30°C. Thunder turns up more in spring and summer, and Magdeburg averages 20.9 thunder days and 0.8 hail days annually. Locals still train through it by starting early, keeping loops flexible, and saving hard intervals for clearer windows. Winter flips the rhythm because the city gets damp and chilly, with 71.7 days below freezing at night and 15.6 days that stay below freezing all day.
