Midnattsolrittet

Midnattsolrittet is a road cycling event in Salten, northern Norway, held on the second weekend of June during the midnight-sun season. Bodø Cycleklubb organizes it. The format is primarily a tour ride, with a separate active class for those seeking a more challenging pace. The event originated from a local concept around Saltenfjorden, expanding from a small club ride to a widely participated event. Its goal is straightforward: to be accessible to all, irrespective of training level or equipment. The original 183 km loop started from Bertnes near Bodø, passing through Tverlandet, Valnesfjord, Fauske, Rognan, Misvær, and Saltstraumen before returning to Bertnes. It began in the evening and concluded late at night. Later, a 54 km "people's stage" from Fauske via Valnesfjord to Mørkved was added, along with a 98 km route from Rognan to Mørkved. The long Salten rundt route is for experienced riders, while the shorter options cater to beginners, workplace teams, educators, local clubs, and general cyclists. All participants get an award at the finish, and the day traditionally concludes with a social event in Mørkved.

Backyard Bodø - Last Man Standing

Backyard Bodø is a Last Man Standing race held in Bodø, Norway, operating under the Backyard Ultra Norway banner. In this race format, participants complete repeated circuits, continuing until only a single runner remains capable of proceeding. The race details are limited, but the broader Backyard Ultra Norway structure is relevant: the organization also offers a personal membership for 200 NOK annually. This membership aids the team that represents Norway in the Backyard World Team Championship, indicating the Bodø race is part of a national backyard-ultra community, not solely an isolated local event.

About cycling & running in Bodø

Bodø Training Notes

Running: Locals run from the city centre into Bodømarka when they want trails, hills, and quick Z2 without much fuss. Maskinisten-Keiservarden-Bertnesskaret-Maskinisten gives a proper local climb, and Keiservarden is brilliant when the weather is nice. Bådin Løpeklubb meets every other Saturday at 12:00 outside Bådin Brewery, and the group rolls about 5 kilometers from Breivika to Rensås Park and back. Bodø Bauta løpeklubb runs open intervals at Bankgata and Bodøhallen on Thursdays at 18:00. Bodø Run Festival, Adventsløpet, Backyard Bodø, Bautaløpet, Junkerfjellet, and Børvasstindan Classic give the calendar real anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride the coast first, because Bodø makes more sense from the bike seat. Kystriksveien brings riders north on county road no. 17 from Rødøy toward Bodø, and fit people can ride that section in 2-3 days. Saltstraumen pulls plenty of base miles out of town, and the strait has one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. The climbs sit south and inland around Børvasstindan, Lurfjelltinden, Junkerfjellet, Keiservarden, Bertnesskaret, Skaugtuva, and Middagsdalfjellet. The local brief names running clubs, not cycling clubs, so riders seem to orbit routes, ferries, Midnattsolrittet, and Arctic Race of Norway 2013 more than a listed crit scene.

Season: June and July are the sweet spot, because the midnight sun stays up from June 1 to July 13. June gives the biggest daylight window, and the average daily sun-hours reach 22.1 hours. August keeps the legs sharp with Bodø Run Festival, Bodøryggen, and Børvasstindan Classic. Summer rides can feel overcast and still comfortable, but wind is a bigger problem for the cyclist than hard rain. Winter changes the rules for both sports, because the sun hides behind the mountains south of Bodø from early December to early January. Locals keep moving, but Z2, intervals, and singletrack all need colder hands and better timing.
