Karlstad Stadslopp

Karlstad Stadslopp is a June running event in Karlstad, Sweden, offering 5 km and 10 km distances. It originated as GötaJoggen, a mass-participation race in Värmland, later adopting its current name when the children’s MiniJogg also became Karlstad Minilopp. The initial race featured longer courses of 15 km and 25 km, but the format evolved as the 10 km gained popularity and opened to all participants. IF Göta Karlstad organizes the event, its history indicates a race designed for both everyday runners and club athletes; the first edition attracted 2,300 participants, and the field soon expanded to the point where a 10,000-entry limit was reached before the deadline. The original GötaJoggen began at Norra Fältet, with runners navigating a bridge bottleneck that became a memorable feature, and concluded at Tingvalla IP during its early growth. Subsequent adjustments relocated the start and finish to Sundsta, establishing a unified event area, though an alternative course commenced near Länsstyrelsen. A MiniJogg for young children was introduced the evening before the main race, later moved to Mariebergsskogen, and a brief inline skating event also proved popular. Its peak year saw approximately 12,400 registered runners, and the event surpassed 100,000 total participants while still known as GötaJoggen. A notable aspect of the race's history involves prize money: the women’s category was added after the men’s, initially with a lesser prize, but the event later awarded equal prizes to both male and female winners.

I2 IF Backyard Ultra

The I2 IF Backyard Ultra takes place in Karlstad, Sweden. Runners complete a 6,706-metre loop, with a new start each hour. The format is straightforward: finish the loop within the hour to begin the next; failing to make the start means the race ends. Organized by I 2 IF Karlstad, this event is for runners aiming to see their endurance limits rather than targeting a specific distance. The loop begins at the I2IF clubhouse near Sandbäckstjärn and enters the former I2 training grounds. The majority of the course follows gravel roads. The primary challenge lies in pacing, nutrition, recovery, and the hourly restart, not in difficult terrain. Participants compete at their own level. This format offers a practical method for individuals to surpass personal distance goals, such as a half marathon or marathon, without pre-committing to a fixed ultra distance.

About cycling & running in Karlstad

Karlstad Training Notes

Running: The route covers 164 km while climbing 16 m. Gubbholmen keeps the mood light before intervals or a longer Z2 day. Klarälven gives the city centre a clean line to follow, and I2 skogen adds proper trail feel. The route covers 226 km and climbs 188 m. I2 IF anchors the club side. Karlstad Stadslopp, SM 10 km väg, Vårruset Karlstad, and I2 IF Backyard Ultra sit on the local race calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride MTB first when they want Karlstad to bite back. Karlstad Grand MTB Loop runs for 56 km and links the good stuff without making the day complicated. I2 skogen is the place for technical trails with many hills and stones, so cyclocross skills help even on the MTB. Tyrskogen gives longer and more open trails, better for relaxed base miles. Valmetrundan keeps the road crowd honest as the anchor event. Karlstad road routes can stretch to 142.6 km and climb 1,697 m, with ramps hitting 16.7%. Böntorpsåsen is where runners and riders go looking for climbing legs.

Season: Summer gives Karlstad its biggest training window, with Vänern and Klarälven making long days feel easy to start. Summer temps hit 20 °C here, so locals move intervals earlier and keep the exposed stuff sensible. Winter changes the rhythm more than the ambition. Winter temps average 0 °C, so runners lean on steady laps and familiar trails, while cyclists swap long road miles for MTB, cyclocross habits, and shorter Z2 work. I2 skogen still matters when the ground behaves. The city centre stays useful because simple loops beat heroic plans when daylight is tight.
