About cycling & running in Barnsley
Barnsley-Dearne Valley Training Notes
Running: Locals run the Dearne Valley River when they want steady Z2 without leaving town. The Around Dearne Valley Run starts at Bolton upon Dearne and goes 5km as it meanders alongside the railway and the tranquil river. The route carries gentle undulations, and its elevation rises from 13m to 35m before the return along Lowfield Lane. The full loop covers 144 miles, with 324 ft of ascent and 301 ft of descent. Steel City Striders meet around Sheffield through the week and run Thursday evening track at Woodburn Road Stadium. Barnsley 10k is the town-centre anchor event, and Higham Hurtle and Wentworth Castle Trail Runs keep the trail legs honest.
Cycling: Barnsley Road Club is Barnsley's oldest and largest cycling club, formed in 1924 and still built around Sunday Club Runs from Barnsley Town Hall. Barnsley Road Club also gives juniors a Saturday 10:00 am coaching slot, which says plenty about the depth here. Locals use the mixed roads for base miles, then point north when they want the hilly work. Barnsley Road Club covers road races, hill climbs, time trials, cyclocross, track races, and midweek gravel rides, so the scene is not narrow. The club runs a 5km tester for newcomers and fast legs alike.
Season: May, June, and July are the sweet spot for both runners and riders.
