Cardiff Training Notes
Cardiff hosts 69 10K races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.
locals keep the easy running close to the River Taff, with Bute Park, Pontcanna Fields, and Llandaff Fields giving you a big green block for Z2. Roath Park gives steady loops, and Roath Park lake also works with a loop around the reservoir. Cefn Onn and home again gives a 10k with a steep pull on Thornhill Road. Pegasus Running Club meets at Cathedral Green in Llandaff at 6:45pm for a 7pm start on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. Cardiff Half Marathon and Cardiff 10k are the anchor races, with Cardiff Summer Series keeping Pontcanna sharp.
locals ride because Cardiff is flat and compact in the middle, then hilly fast once you point north, east, or west. The Taff Trail runs 55 miles between Cardiff and Brecon, and it gives proper base miles without much faff. Cardiff Bay Trail gives over 10km around the Bay, and the Cardiff heritage loop gives 75km from the National Museum Cardiff. Cardiff Ajax Cycling Club meets at Maindy Centre, and Cardiff JIF cycling club members train on the Gwent levels and hills of South Wales. Caerphilly mountain, Garth Hill, Wattsville to Cwm Carn, and Penylan Hill bring the climbing; CARTEN100 is the anchor sportive.
Winter days give you about 6 hours of sunshine. Locals use those long evenings for intervals in Pontcanna, steady rides over the barrage, and Z2 along the Taff Trail. Winter changes the feel without killing the training, because Cardiff stays mild, wet, cloudy, and windy rather than properly frozen. The Taff Trail is beautiful in winter, but slippery leaves change the line, and the north of the county feels cooler and wetter while the south stays flatter and low-lying.
