The Amazing Northampton Run

The Northampton Run begins in Market Square, offering participants three options: a 13.1-mile half marathon, a three-person half marathon relay, or a 3.3-mile fun run. This is a closed-road race through Northampton, supported by marshals, mile markers, pacers, and four water stations at approximately three-mile intervals. Go Beyond Events organizes the series, catering to solo half-marathon runners, relay teams, charity participants, and those seeking a shorter town-centre race. The half marathon departs from the historic Market Square, rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1675. It proceeds downhill over South Bridge and continues through a varied course featuring parks, university roads, riverside paths along the River Nene, and Northampton's sports venues. The route passes Abington Park, the University campus, Sixfields Stadium, Franklin's Gardens, and The County Ground, effectively serving as a tour of the town. All finishers receive a medal, half-marathon finishers also receive a T-shirt, and prizes are awarded to the top three male and female runners. Over 30 charity partners benefit from the event, offering free places to runners who secure a minimum sponsorship.

Battle Of Stamford Bridge Run

The Battle Of Stamford Bridge Run is a six-hour timed trail event in Northampton, beginning in the NN4 7AA area at 9:00 am. Participants follow a flat out-and-back route, completing laps to build their distance. This setup accommodates 5K, 10K, half marathon, and longer distances for those who maintain movement within the time limit. The course is a steady trail path with minimal climbing and no complex point-to-point logistics. The format suits runners aiming for a fixed distance and those testing their endurance over six hours. The event's name originates from the Battle of Stamford Bridge in East Yorkshire, where Harold Godwinson’s English army defeated a Norwegian force led by Harald Hardrada and Tostig Godwinson. The battle, which saw the death of both leaders, is often considered the end of the Viking Age.

The course offers consistent terrain and requires no navigation. The task is straightforward: maintain pace, make the turn, and track laps. A related Halloween Trick or Trot Run in Kansas City’s Mill Creek Park provides 5K, 10K, and 13.1-mile choices. It is open to runners and walkers of all ages and paces, with free Halloween candy distributed post-race. Its wave start system may lead to popular start times filling before registration closes.

About cycling & running in Northampton

Northampton Training Notes

Running: The Racecourse is the easy local lap, with Northampton parkrun starting by the basketball courts. Northampton parkrun runs two anti-clockwise laps around 118 acres, and the park dips slightly so runners can open up a little. The slight incline is still not too bad, so locals treat it as fast base miles. Northampton Road Runners covers 5k to ultra running from the University of Northampton, with Wednesday formal sessions and 5 mile plus routes. Run Talk Run Northampton meets at 18:50 on Thursdays for a free weekly 5km. The Amazing Northampton Run is the anchor day, with Northampton 5K & 10K close behind.

Cycling: Norbital gives locals an 18-mile circular cycle route around Northampton on dedicated paths, so it works for Z2, family spins, or a steady winter loop. Brampton Valley Way runs 16 miles north from Northampton to Market Harborough, and that railtrail is the obvious out-and-back for quiet base miles. Fineshade Wood gives off-road riders a 5-mile Forestry Commission cycle trail and a 7-mile mountain bike trail. Stanwick Lakes keeps things flatter on NCN71 between Irthlingborough and Thrapston. CTC Northampton, Northampton CTC, Easy Rider Cycle Club, Treadscycle Club, Cyclone Mountain Bike Club, and 45 Road Club give riders plenty of wheels to follow. Cycle Streets elevation profiles are where locals check the climbs before intervals.

Season: Summer gives runners The Racecourse, Upton Country Park, Brixworth Country Park, and Pitsford Water when the legs want space. Summer gives cyclists Norbital, Brampton Valley Way, Stanwick Lakes, Salcey Forest, and Fineshade Wood when a crit brain needs calmer miles. The brief does not name exact best months, so locals usually read the season by routes rather than dates. Winter pushes runners toward dependable club sessions, Northampton parkrun, and shorter 5k efforts. Winter pushes riders toward dedicated paths, railtrail miles, and off-road days where cyclocross legs and singletrack handling matter more than speed. The Amazing Northampton Run stays the big running anchor, and Gretton Charity Sportive gives the county riding calendar a clear target.
